This, along with Pitfall, was my favourite Atari 2600 title. What made this game so great at its time was its gameplay - so original and addictive. In fact, the original Mario Bros arcade was heavily influenced by Joust (a polite way of saying it was a Joust rip-off). All Nintendo did was replace the jousters with the mario brothers, the pterodactyls with koopas, and instead of flying around, the mario brothers jump around. The gameplay is the same.
So you can argue that Joust was pretty much the birth of the classic 2d platform games.
