Most important features?

Feel strongly about import/export...

Although I wouldn't say its the most important feature, I would like to see how many new messages were posted on the groups to which you belong to since your last visit. You could then also have a "View Posts Since Last Visit" type of thing much like phpbb forums. I suppose this ties directly into forum searching where the date/time of posts is beyond you last pageview date/time.

I live in an expat community in China. It isn't as important for me to see that 'Bob' in New York owns a movie. Rather, I'd like to know who in my group (or selected groups) owns the movie so I can know who to borrow from.
Group specific stats.

I think it would be nice to have subcategories when you're looking for something, Like if you're looking for a video game, you could search by name and platform. I think that would make listel much easier to use. For movies you could search by the name and maybe an actor or the director, in case there's more then one movie with the same name.

When adding a custom entry, the person who added it should be able to edit it after it's been saved.
Also, if they add a duplicate by mistake they should be able to remove it.
I added an album today then realised I'd put the artist wrong. I couldn't edit it, so I had to add it again as a new one. Then I realised I couldn't remove the first (incorrect) one.

It could also say the name of the user it was edited by, in case someone wants to ask a question about the listing.

The ability for a group starter to delete recommended items, and for the user to remove recommendations they have made.

If I get on my friends list, and go to their wanted list and click on an item, there is no option to add it to my owned or wanted...
it is a minor pain in the neck because I have to do a search for each item I see that I want instead of simply being able to click on the "Add to my faves" button
Anyways.. thanks...

I would like to second the motion put forward by JDMX:
"03. In our Images - Grid view (In Music) we should be able to see the artist as well as the album name when hovering over the image."
In my opinion, this is the only thing that Listal is lacking in, and should not be an extremely hard bit of code to add.

-Having the ability to delete mail...
Yes. I agree! I hope this feature can be added.
-Having the ability to delete "friends"...
Also agreed! I'd also like to see the friends section have more features. Well, @ least a feature to arrange your friends list so you can put certain people in your 6 list.

New to the site. I like it's simplicity. Just noticed when adding by ISBN some books are listing an incorrect ISBN on the cover. How about a confirmation of title when it says your item has been added? Let us know if we got what we expected.

tom, is really reading this? i haven't seen replys
this site is abandoned?
this site is abandoned?

Yes I'm still reading! Hopefully I will release some new features this week.

that's wonderful, sorry for the incredulity of the other post =)

I'd love to see the ability to change or update artwork. It's a real pain (even if it has it artwork in Amazon.com) it doesn't always come through.
Great site - Keep up the good work Tom.

I don't know if anyone else has said this or not, but it would be cool if we had the ratings of the movies on the seperate lists...... :D

I would like a way to export my items to excel, or even in CSV format. And a way to better control friends (like who you would like to accept as friends, etc.) The groups should also have an option of being restricted to invitees only.

Hopefully I will release some new features this week.
Can't wait.

Completely agree! Only thing missing on Listal.

I'd like to chime in for my support of a 5-star ratings system rather than 10. My own databases use a 5-star system so it's easy to transfer. Likewise, for music, my media player uses a 5-star system and several other sites I frequent do as well. I would absolutely agonize over ratings using a 10-star system.
I'd like to see methods to edit items either globally (preferable) or personally (saves the population from bad edits), including adding alternate art when Amazon has none or theirs does not populate this site. I would also like to see tracklistings included on music items and a method to specify preferred currency. It's nice to have imports but I'd like to see a conversion done when viewing my own items.
Install a mechanism that detects extraneous spaces at the end of artist names, delete them, and convert the name to the correct artist if one exists. I've got two Jethro Tulls in my profile now: "Jethro Tull" and "Jethro Tull ", this after adding one album from an ASIN.
Delete friends.
That's all I can think of right now. Thanks! :)

I think a changable 10 star to 5 star and vice-versa would be good since alot of people want it 10 star and alot want 5.

"I really think we need to figure out a way to combine the Movies and DVDs tab."
Agree here. I'd like to see them linked somehow with the ability to Add to Movies Watched or Add to DVDs Owned/Wanted. I'm certainly going to watch the DVDs I own and therefore want to add them to the Watched portion of the Movies section. Likewise I may want to add a really great movie I've watched to the Wanted portion of the DVDs section because I just have to have it at home.

Whatever happened to the improved RSS discussed on the blog? I'd really like to see some RSS capabilities.

Just joined, and I really like this product, but I've had some ideas, some are based on pain points I have encountered. The dev team seams really in touch and open, so in spite of some of my ideas being trivial, I'm just going to spew them here. I've tried to read back through this thread but, if I duplicate previous idea's I'm sorry.
1. a 'today' button on the lent/returned feature that sets the date to the current date, instead of having to pick it from the drop down, or default it to today. Additionally the three drop down selector for date might be more natural if it was one of the pop-up/pop-in calendar style controls.
2. Bulk ISBN/ASIN/Barcode importer, by scanning, or copying multiple items into a comma/carriage return delimited list, and importing all of them. Include a verification screen that allows for correction of miss entered items, or items that can't be found.
3. Collection visualization could be improved by adding additional views, including a view with just the item art, and title printed below so that a large number of items can be displayed at once. Include some sort of status indicator so that at a glance once can visual distinguish the item status. IE lent, borrowed, want etc. This could be accomplished by creating a separate set of tags that instead of being descriptors of the item, be descriptors of the items status. Those tags would then translate into some form of graphical status representation, i.e. a coloured box, or a little flag.
4. The ability to copy an item tag from the generic tag list, to your personal tag list for an item. (Hey, I'm just lazy :)
5. Item history, if I'm capturing when and who and item is lent to, and when it is returned, being able to visualize the history of an item, so a) I know where it has been if there is a problem, b) I don't recommend the same item twice :)
6. Friend history, along the same thread being able to see what items I have lent to a friend over time.
7. Item due date, being able to set a due date that either automatically notifies me, the person I have lent the item to, or both after a certain point of time. So that I remember that the person has it, and they remember to watch it and return it.
Anyways, just a shotgun full of ideas, and I can't wait to see where this project goes. No plans on making in open source? I'd love to be able to help out.

1] Search/Import by UPC (for DVDs)
2] 5 Star rating (if possible)
3] Ability to see the ratings for items when they're in 'Images - Grid' mode. Also when cursor is hovering above the item, say an album for instance, it would be nice to see the artist as well as the album name.
4] Personal 'notepad' area for each item where a user can just put a random comment about why they like or dislike the item or how its inspired them or whatever. I suppose a user could put this in the review section of the item page, but I'm thinking more of a notepad option would be better, less formal, and it would only be visible when clicked on from the user's profile. Any of that make sense?
All I can think of at the moment. So far the site is looking very nice though, I like the visual aspect alot, blacks and greys are nice colours. Keep up the good work Tom.

Reply to my own thread before anyone can point out how foolish I am. On my third point about vizualization, the grid view is of course already present, I'm just stupid. Now about those status flags :)
And an 8th point, ISBN-13 numbers aren't found correctly in at amazon.com, but if you manually search amazon.com they are there.

5] Unlimited typing space to search for items would be nice too.

6] Search by EAN number as well (for CDs)
7] Sometimes when I add a book there is no cover for it, would it be possible to upload an image or link to one myself?
8] Ability to make an item unrated.

Definitely a forum search. This way I can find out if my question has been asked yet instead of asking again. I put all my votes into this bucket:)

Is there any way to add a "Request to Borrow" option on the "View Only" page? Example: If I link to my listal account from my website, can other people request to borrow a DVD or other item. Of course, these people would need to be a listal member.

Have any new features been released? I haven't been on this site as much as before becuz of other things, but I haven't seen anything new. So, I wasn't sure...

How about a customizable "Sort As" field, where you can enter in a title to use when sorting, as opposed to the often inaccurate alphabetical sorting based on the title of the work. DVD Profiler has this feature and it's extremely useful, both for correctly sorting the myriad "A", "An", and "The" titles, and for keeping sets of books or DVDs with different titles together (e.g. Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness sorted as "Evil Dead 1", "Evil Dead 2", "Evil Dead 3")

I wish if there was a way to remove friends. Maybe you could work on that next. :)

I know LibraryThing.com is not free (well the free version limits your collection to 200 books I think), but they have interesting features.
It would be nice to be able to edit information, eg:
-Author when missing or misspelt (or actors, directors, band names and track lists, for that matter)
-Choose the book cover that corresponds to the edition you own.
A better sorting, especially with names (Delicious Library uses the last word in the "author" field, which is often the author's last name, and even though it's not always perfect, it's at least better than sorting by the first letter in the field). (Same goes with titles beginning with "the").
A "series" and "order in series" field?
These are my suggestions. Good luck and thanks for this great site!

I'd really like to see a blog widget. It would be great publicity for the site as i'm sure people would put it on their myspace, blogger, etc sites.
As a down the road thing... I don't know if you have seen the site lala.com, but it trades CDs as well. A collaborative effort might be good with them. If not, at least its something to look at and maybe get new ideas for listal.com.
A yahoo widget for Yahoo Widget Engine (formerly Konfablator) would be great. This is along the lines of a blog widget.
A plugin for the various music players such as iTunes, rhapsody, winamp, etc to show a recently played list on the site would rock. You could then add a CD from that list since you would have just played it.
It might also be beneficial to add an mp3 section. A lot of people download music (legally or not, doesn't really matter in this case) and would like to list it as an mp3 instead of a CD that they own.

Ha, at this point I'd love to see any kind of update :)

It would be nice to be able to edit information
I wish that'd happen, but atlas not yet. Hopefully it'll happen one day.

I have been looking through this list again to see what I've done with the recent updates and what is left to do.
Done so far :
- Ratings stars now have 5 stars with half stars
- Blog/Profile widgets
- RSS export
- Ratings stars on custom lists
- Remove and reorder friends
- Adding artwork
- More importers
Work has started on :
- Show similar people based on your ratings
- Product recommendations
- Better profile page design with comments and customization
Then work will start on :
Edit product information
Not sure after that...

Any chance on having some basic HTML available to us in the profiles (for links, line breaks, etc.)? Nothing crazy, even just line breaks would be awesome. Thanks!

yes! I have been meaning to add that for a while, it will be like the current forum system where it allows certain html e.g. currently :
'a' with attributes : ['href', 'target']
'b'
'i'
'pre'
'blockquote'
'img' with attributes : ['src', 'width', 'height', 'alt']

1) Ability to rate when using images-grid view
2) Filter out items already in your list when viewing recommendations and search results (or at least show that it is already in your list)
That's all I've noticed so far... I've only been a member for less than a day. Great service though, cheers!

I kind of like how uniform the site is. If I am browsing through other peoples' lists it would be shock to have the colours change everytime I hit a new one. :/
