Most important features?

Sometimes it's hard to deciding which to work on next (and I end up doing nothing a lot of the time). I want to focus on stuff that 50% of people will use not just a few %.

I was just wondering what people would consider essential new features for this site and the ones which would really get people using it.

I think responses here will really help me to decided what is important to do next.

New profile themes/color schemes and more options for the friends list. Especially new profile themes, since that's been mentioned a few times for a while now.

What also might help is if you write out a list of things members want and pick out the easiest thing if you don't have much time or don't feel like udating. That way @ least you'd have something accomplished. 0_o

Color schemes? i don't think that's so important feature. How about let people create lists? Like Top 10 Horror Movies, or something like that? That can make listal more "live","organic" so people will access more the site.

I'm sorry, but it's not fair to say my ideas aren't important when your top ten list isn't either. That feature has been used on collection sites before and they never worked that well/were not very popular. It is a good feature yes, but not very important.

I only made the post earlier becuz I didn't see anyone else replying yet and my post wasn't pushing the importance level, I was just mentioning some ideas. When others do get a chance to post I won't be the one to tell them that what they say isn't important, becuz everything they say and want for this site so it may grow into something awesome and huge online is infact important.

Color adds interest....different colored member pages would attract I say and top ten lists can be fun especially if you're getting to know a person. You'll be like hey I like those movies too, but if you suddenly fight with the person and you're like i don't want them as a friend anymore...there definitely needs to be a take off option. People have been posting great suggestions. I say take the time to actually look at them all and start adding them one by one when you have time so everybody is satisfied before you get too piled up with comments and then after lock topics that you've already worked on...so you dont get too confused.

BradHasBigEars mentioned showing latest posts in your profile. MistressZ asked to links in the profile, Rodrigo requested top ten, Mark asked to fix the 'country' section, various have stated about the errors in already listed items.

Start with the little finish with the big I say.

what about the ability to upload your contact list and see if any of your friends have already joined this service?

also, ways to view your most recent additions to the list (movies, music, all) on your blog or website (myspace, etc.)

I personally think syncing or importing from other programs would be of key importance.

Tom I think it would be great if you added blogs for the users to post in.

Being able to add our own artwork to movies that don't have any. Really annoying when viewing the gallery list that you cant see what all your movies are.

Manling - thanks for seconding. Also Tom, I would think that the importing would be of greatest importance to those who have not yet adopted this site for their collection. Recruiting new users will keep this service viable for the long term. I would also like to add some (unobtrusive) way to support Listal development now and in the future - a page of banner ads, purchase revenue from Amazon, etc.

As I have said in the past:
I think that under everyone's profile there should be the amount of message board posts they have made and it could be clickable so that people could see every post you have made in a forum. It could also be under your user picture on the forum itself.
I think you should add somethings to this site like allowing people to see when the people they want to add or online or not. Also it would be nice if when you searched for a name it was clickable and things like that. Allowing us to see all the friends on people's friend lists would be nice also.
I think that you should also add an option for people who lend each other dvds to comment about lending the dvds to each other and maybe rate the lending experience with the person. I think it would be nice before people start lending to strangers, not that I am willing to lend any of my dvds to anyone, there's that fear that the dvds won't come back or they will come back broken and I wouldn't be able to handle it.

Also some forum suggestions could be making it easier to reply to a certain post by adding the option to quote the user who said something you would like to reply to and it would be nice if you would be able to see all the posts of the poster under their avator. Maybe a small picture gallery of avatars so you could have a choice without deleting any.

Being able to edit the viewproduct screens to correct or add information. I suppose this would also include being able to add a picture, there are times when changing a picture would be appropriate too.

I know this opens up a can o'worms. Some sort of audit trail might work. Last person to make a change. For instance:

It annoys me when there is no describtion of what I own. I was wondering if you could add something for a member to add a describtion if there is none? Perhaps you could even look it over and approve it to make sure no one posts anything as a joke.

Yeah, I'm hoping that feature will be added as well. Like an edit manually feature for items that are listed incorrectly or in the wrong sections and with no describtions. And they could be 'waiting' to be approved for whenever Tom as time to overlook them and accept them.

Added view all friends and now link all interests etc to member listings pages! I am will be working on a number of things mentioned in this thread in the coming weeks...

If we let people personalize their page too much it may get ugly like myspace. Since many people don't know code, some myspace pages are incomprehensible and will freeze up your computer. I vote for:

1.adding year to date joined, easy at this point, because it should be 2006 all around
2.make it so that i can add books i don't own
3. make it so that you can add to the database
4. check out rateyourmusic.com for a nice format
5. i think the way we rate things should be averaged and shown, i guess along with IMDB is fine

I totally agree, but no, definitely none of us want exaggerated profiles. Mostly, some of us have mentioned or talked about is adding simple things like custom colored profiles to choose from or tweak, a list of links that can be optional for people. Some have even suggested showing the latest posts also on a member profile.

Everything talked about would be for optional use and would be controlled without overloading pages, haha.

The most important thing for me would be the "Edit your custom added items" part.

I would definitely NOT like to see the ability for users to change/define their own CSS styles and colors for their profiles. This site is clean and professional which is why I use it. If you really want to express yourself, create your own website :) Then you can "express" (the reverse of clean and professional) yourself all you want.

I would like to see more information after adding and item including the item added, the respective section and time maybe. Right now you just see "Item has been added!"

The features that I think are most important are:

* Export
* Better Tagging
- Tags carry over from wanted to collection
- Adding tabs in Item description show all your used tags
* Edit (aka remove) items in friend tags
- Recommended Items
- Friends
- Mail
* Better listing of groups

Well, I have been doing html work for a long time now. I own and run various sites and forums and yes I express myself on all of them quite well. Thank you though for the humble suggestion.

Amazon doesn't show Artist:
I don't know if it's a bug or not, but when I search for something in the music category, and use the amazon.com instead of a local search, it doesn't show the artist.

But if I add the amazon item to my list, then the artist shows up. I was just wondering if you would mind fixing it, please.

I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree. You voiced your opinion, but you judged my idea. If you were concerned about this site and the feature I mentioned, then you could have asked me politely through PMed me instead of bringing it up here and making a post about what I said and turning it into something it's not. I notice you did this to only me and to no one else. I don't see how my suggestions are different from others on here nor do I see how simple new colors that can be for optional use can potentially affect other users experiences.

This is for members to post what they want on here or what they'd like to see and Tom and only Tom and other staff members can decide what is right for this site. Infact Tom PMed me about the idea when I used html work in my profile a few weeks ago and he told me about the idea first and said that he liked it and would use it in the future.

Maybe you should add a place for computer software, I know a lot of people proabaly own things like Paint Shop Pro and wouldn't mind listing them.

Most important features needed are:

1. 'similar libraries' feature like on librarything - this is so useful for finding new items! It finds other users with similar collections to yours.

2. Being able to create a listing for films that do not appear in the available lists (like great foreign films).

Feel strongly about import/export...

The reason I think that import/export is a strong candidate for most important has to do with site confidence. I enjoy Listal a lot, but I have over 2000 books and 1000 movies, and am having trouble really committing to entering all that data here, unless it is in a format I can use someplace else (export), or get from my home database easily (import). It's hard to imagine committing that much time/effort to a site you are not sure will be around forever (no offense). I think the key to adopting more users will be import/export in order to raise confidence in the value of using the site.

"select all" is really a good option, im almost dying selecting the cds that i have from Jimi Hendrix =)

What about "Recently Added" per category section (of course context sensitive) instead only on the Home & Profile page?
