I'm absolutely loving the changes so far, especially the new view options and sections. I'm curious though, would it be possible to also rearrange the section order..or is this something that's in place and I just overlooked it?

Maybe it's just me but I can't rearrange any of my lists now. When I try to rearrange it just shows nothing at all, as if it's a list with zero items.

Thank you, Not yet but I will add it in the future.

Should be ok now.

If anyone has created any interesting multi section lists, link them here. I would love to take a look at them.

How do you delete sections? Also, are sections only viewable to other members? When I view a list I just made sections in, I can't see them, other than how the list is arranged. Aren't the tabs supposed to appear at the top of our lists? If not, and I've misunderstood the implementation of sections, wouldn't it be easier for members to simply categorize a list a certain way? For example, for a list of all the games I own I categorized them by platform. What's the purpose of sections if I've already done just that by simply rearranging them myself?

Also, the list order presented on my profile isn't what I set it to. I chose "recently updated" and it's only showing "top voted", regardless of what I happen to change it to.

I don't really like how small other members' avatars look now in our comment sections on our profiles...

I'm not trying to be negative, but the only change I honestly like is the new header in lists (love how minimal it looks!) and the ability to add TV items to movie lists. The section idea is a good one, but only if it's able to work the way you presented it in your last blog post. I'm not a fan of how large the print is for list titles (shown on profiles and on the front page) and also for the related list section on lists, with the votes now shown under the titles. Also, how about the ability to hide the "You have played 100%/33 Games from this list and want to play 0. View unlisted" section underneath the description in lists? Also, I liked how the default image for a list was rectangular, where you could see the entirety of the poster/cover. With it being a square, it's hard to see much of anything.

I'm sorry Tom, some of these updates are kind of disappointing to me. When I first logged into the site a while ago my response was "WTF?" instead of "Aw cool!". :(

Noticed a grammatical error in a DVD list: "You have own none of the DVDs from this list and want to own none. View unlisted" (from that little section below a description/above related lists).

Also noticed that the little stars I had included in some of my DVD lists that linked back to the movies themselves are no longer there. From my Criterion Collection list the code now reads: [ img id=1183713 width=500full align=right link=false ] Am I going to have to go back in and edit each item in the list again? :/

How do you delete sections?

You can't yet, coming soon...

When I view a list I just made sections in, I can't see them, other than how the list is arranged. Aren't the tabs supposed to appear at the top of our lists?

No the sections are displayed on the same page (up to the list limit) e.g. www.listal.com/list/test-5851 . I could show them as tabs at the top (depending on interest) in a future update. Post a link to the list here and I can see if there are any errors.

I don't really like how small other members' avatars look now in our comment sections on our profiles...

I can probably change this, the comment images for the lists are actually bigger now.

Noticed a grammatical error in a DVD list: "You have own none of the DVDs from this list and want to own none. View unlisted" (from that little section below a description/above related lists).

Fixed this.

Also noticed that the little stars I had included in some of my DVD lists that linked back to the movies themselves are no longer there. From my Criterion Collection list the code now reads:

The images should display fine now.

with the votes now shown under the titles. Also, I liked how the default image for a list was rectangular, where you could see the entirety of the poster/cover. With it being a square, it's hard to see much of anything.

I agree in some cases the square looks worse, I will experiment in bringing the longer images back and see how it looks. The voting box was moved for related lists because it pushed some of the titles on to 2 lines and could look messy. e.g.

www.listal.com/viewimage/1225999 It looks less messy and more compact now.

The changes are interesting, but my only true interest with the new changes is the sections, and as 350125g0 said above, there seems to be no real use for them. I'd love to be able to give the sections sub-titles, and I would definitely like to see a difference between sections visually on the list. Otherwise I could have just manually sorted them that way myself.

I do like the watched/want to watch statistics on the movie pages, though I went to a "want to see" list of mine where I have the movies marked only as "want to see," and it said I wanted to watch none.

I'm confused, you are saying there is no use but then saying you want them :)

To add a title or description to a section you need to click edit section, here is a quick example of the kind of stuff you can do:

Post a link to the list and I will see what the problem is.

I'm loving percent completion! The only problem is that it gets distorted on book lists, as there are at least five editions of any given popular book.

This is the one list I experimented with as far as sections go:
http://www.listal.com/list/my-game-collection-350125g0.

Given the fact that I already sorted the list by console, and alphabetically, sections don't really help me out at all. I misunderstood what your intention was with list sections initially. I now see what you mean, and honestly, I have no use for them at all. Here is what I thought list sections were going to look like and how helpful they might have been:
http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/996/listw.jpg

I have highlighted the changes I made with a (flimsy) red rectangle. With tabs at the top of a list, users are able to select a section they'd most like to view. Without choosing any tabs, a list simply contains all items. But let's say I want to view just the PS2 items in the aforementioned list... all I have to do is click on the PS2 tab at the top and voila! All that's shown are the items contained within that section. But let's say I don't want to view that section anymore (collapsible tabs would help here), I want to view what's in the Xbox and Xbox 360 sections: click boths tabs and there you go. Collapse tabs to view items in other sections, etc. This would be helpful in many other instances, like movie lists sectioned into year of release, music albums by genre, actresses by their hair colour, etc. etc. etc.

And so, with the way sections are implemented now, I'd just as soon rearrange/categorize my list how I see fit, all without using the sections tool as it has proved to be rather useless to me.

Hi Tom, while the iron's hot, is there any chance of adding your overall average rating of the items in a list in the statistics panel?

eg: You have watched 90%/8 Movies from this list and want to watch 2, with an average rating of 7.8/10

I agree in some cases the square looks worse, I will experiment in bringing the longer images back and see how it looks.

Why not give users the option to use a square or rectangular default image for lists?

Edit: I see from your comparison image that the new related list section is a little less messy, but I do miss being able to see when a list was created from that section.

And a big thanks for fixing a few of the things I mentioned earlier. :)

There was a bug which I've just fixed stopping the section headings or descriptions not being displayed in some cases. I think with the section headings now displaying it will show the use of the new sections.

Just one question, though, is there a limit to how many sections we can have within a list?

Edit: And how likely are you to include an update that will allow us to rearrange the order of sections?
Hyomil 13 years, 10 months ago at Jul 3 17:48 -
Glad to see the changes.

Definitely interested in this and made a suggestion for it here to gauge interest:

www.listal.com/suggestion/315

If the contents of a section span multiple pages, how else to quickly switch between them, especially now that page numbers on lists are gone (presumably due to the difficulty in calculating how many pages there are in the list since it will change depending on the Display mode)?

Also, if you use the Sort by: drop-down to change the order of the list, sections are eliminated altogether and you have no way of even knowing which section any given item belongs to (One solution would be putting the name of the section in the large column of empty space on the left of lists.) let alone being able to display a sorted list of only the items in the current section.

One other small thing when editing: When dragging thumbnails onto the section tabs, the tab changes color to a darker blue only after you release the mouse button. Could it be made to change as soon as you move the cursor over it? This would speed things up a little, as you wouldn't have to be as careful that the cursor was on the correct tab.
Elfflame 13 years, 10 months ago at Jul 3 17:57 -
What I meant about sections, was that they didn't seem to do more than sort them more, though now that I've looked at a few examples, I can see there is more going on than I had considered. I definitely love the idea of having sub-sections in a list.
I've played with it a bit more, and I would still would like a bit more as far as formatting options for sections, but I see more than I did upon first glance.
I do have one issue so far: www.listal.com/list/superheroes-elfflame
That list currently has three sections, but only the first two show. There are currently over 50 items on the list, and the third section doesn't start until item 60, so I'm wondering if that might be why? Is this the same problem you were talking about above with the sections not showing?

Here's another vote for being able to rearrange sections on a list. That would be very helpful.

The list the wanted to watch wasn't showing on is this one: www.listal.com/list/afi-top-100-movies-to-see

LOVING the changes =) Especially the "Minimal" that gives a bit more spotlight to the ratings itself regarding to movies.

- One thing "missing" is some sort of auto-fit size for images when shown in the white or wood shelf. Different sizes makes it a bit messy sometimes.
Noticed some bugs last night but i guess i just caught Tom implementing the changes, now its all good ( at least what i have noticed.

Also love the percentage and when we see a pic, it says the lists that person is.

Haven't tried to add TV Movies to movies list but that was very important.

Ps: is it me or the list name fonts are bigger then the rest?

Whenever I'm rearranging my movie lists and click on page 2 for the TV search, it gives me a lot of miscellaneous movies that don't really fall in with the criteria entered. For instance, I searched for "Ultraman" TV entries while rearranging my Ultra Series list, and when I click for the next ten items it gives me ten unrelated movies, including Harlan County U.S.A., P.U.N.K.S., and C.H.U.D. II - Bud the Chud. They all have words that start with "U", but "ltraman" is ostensibly missing. =P

Gone from the bottom of the list but still at the top.

I will look into it but I'm not sure if it's possible to change this.

Yes it will only display the first 50 items or whatever you have set the list limit to.

just two things i would like to say:
- it seems that now that you've completed all the updates the order in which my lists appear in the list module is completely arbitrary and confused...
it would be nice if you could introduce a way to change the order and the number of list we can see in the list module
- also, i don't really like the new shape of the thumbnails of the lists...

List issues:

When you don't make headers, the movie of the next section is added to the previous sections's movies, and apostrophes are not working well for me:
www.listal.com/list/30day-movie-meme

When I type something like hadn't it shows as hadn\'t. Is this something fixable? I've always had this issue in the search box, but I didn't worry about it because I could get around it. But as formatting for the list, it looks messy.

i skimmed through and didn't see anyone request this (and if someone did, my apologies), but since we now have the ability to split lists up into sections, is there any chance that we could list a single item in a list more than once as long as it's in a different section each time?

like if someone was doing a list of best movies or games or books (or really anything we can list on this site, for that matter) of the year. say one we list in the best of a particular genre, but also want to list it as one of the best of the year as a whole...like tetris would easily be the best puzzle game from when it came out, but it'd also be a top candidate, if not the winner, for game of that year as a whole. so, it'd be neat to be able to place that same item twice on the list - once in the puzzle game of the year section and once in the game of the year section. just an idea. :)

Added as a suggestion here.

I started to convert my lists into sections but changed my mind after realizing their limitations. You can do more if you just have separate lists. In addition to not being able to add the same item to multiple sections, they lack the ability

1. to quickly switch to different sections. If you use separate lists, you can just put links to the separate lists in the Description.
2. for other members to sort each section separately.
3. to quickly add an item to a particular section with the '+Custom' link on an item's page.
4. on an item's page, in the display of lists that an item belongs to, display which section of the list the item is on. Suggestion.
5. to get updates in the RSS feed of only particular sections. Suggestion.

Being able to set the View to Poster and Minimal is nice, but if you do that, there's no way for other members to switch back to Notes view or know if there are any notes. Suggestion.
