Sharp, dark series but becomes very tired and empty at some point after the second season, with only shock tactics and poorly set up surprise twists to rely on; I can't remember exactly when--read the reviews. Not optimistic about the fall 2010 reboot after seeing the preview.
Uneven series. Has its moments but has really lost its luster by the end, falling into the typical trap of big out-of-nowhere reversals and twists that cease to have any impact and cheapen everything that went before.
Series that's good in bursts, but there's a lot of characters and its convoluted and hard to follow, so it loses some of the punch it otherwise might've had. Apparently they condensed the series into a trio of movies in an attempt to do that.
Followed by: Kiddy Girl-and (Not on IMDb yet and haven't seen it.)
This list is for the movies, TV, and anime I recommend that have females fighting (not exclusively females fighting each other) as a central theme. I'm including series with fights using magical or psychic powers but will try to note the ones that are exclusively that. There's a fairly wide range (except for extreme horror/gore like Elfen Lied, The Machine Girl, etc., which I avoid).
Most of my favorites are subtitled Asian movies and anime. With each, rather than put "I prefer turning on the subtitles over the dub," I'll just put it once here because I haven't found any exceptions yet. Most, if I had to listen to the dub, I wouldn't care to watch the movie/series at all, and I often don't even bother checking the dub.
Entries sorted by my rating (those toward the bottom of the list are borderline and could be skipped without missing much). Anything below 3 stars or that don't have very much action I moved to a separate Females Fighting [the 'Non-Favorite' ones] list, so you can subscribe to the RSS feed of this list and not get a bunch of those as updates. There's also a Females Fighting [the 'Not Interested' ones]. And a Females Fighting [the 'Want to watch' ones] list that I'll transfer to this list or the other one as I see them.
So Close really was highly entertaining! I love the surprise twist near the end of the flick! [without giving away too big a spoiler] No Character Shields!!! ;D
Maybe I'm a Chinese immigrant? Or lived in China for a time? Or have Chinese relatives? Actually, none of the above. :) I just saw the movie "So Close," to try something different, loved it, wanted to find others like it, and in searching for them found many movies unlike any I'd seen in the US. I don't have a preference for Chinese--there's just as many Japanese movies (and even more TV shows) I like and a few from Thailand, Taiwan, and Korea as well (though I've had the least luck with Korean movies). I used to stick to American movies because dubs were laughable and the idea of reading subtitles seemed tedious and that I wouldn't get as much out of the movie because I couldn't relate or things would be lost in translation. I still watch US movies but usually get a "been there, done that" feeling and go back to Asian stuff, where even if a movie isn't the greatest, it seems interesting and new. Perhaps, you, if you're from China, have an interest in other country's movies due to already having seen so many Chinese ones.
But I also feel that many of the actors have either a more genuine or upbeat quality (as opposed to a tired, cynical, crude, standoffish, or depressed quality) that isn't valued in US movies, probably because it would seem fake/saccharine/mocking if done by the kinds of actors who are generally popular.
Very nice list. I agree with most of the films you've listed here especially So Close and Chocolate. Btw, there's one more Jeeja Yanin starrer, it's called Raging Phoenix. You might want to include that in your list. Although, IMO, Chocolate is a lot better. You've given me quite a few movies to check out like House of Fury and Painted Skin, so thanks. :) I see you've included animes as well... Noir totally rocks! :)
Thanks. I've got the Raging Phoenix Blu-ray and will certainly watch it, for the action, at least; its just not high on my list since I saw so many bad reviews for it. Moon Lee movies are what I'm most into at the moment.
If you liked Noir, I'll surely be adding Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (2009) to the list, which is by the same director. (Madlax I'd recommend as well, though less enthusiastically, and I'd pass on El Cazador de la bruja) I'm down to the last 2 episodes, and it gets more Noir-like at the end. There's a Blu-ray release this year, so you might wait for that, in case there are any good extras.
