What games are you playing?

dspin 14 years, 2 months ago at Feb 18 12:11 -
The original Jezzball - took me 8 yrs to get a little past 8 million. Trying for 10 million but I think its out of the question. Can't quit playing though. Played once for 8 hrs. Nuts

Balder's Gate and Champions have been an obssession of mine for about four years, even though I've beaten them several times. I'm currently trying God of War, and having a blast with it because I like the graphics especially well. Just beat Call of Duty and it was a great first-person shooter.

Oh, and my publisher asked me for a proposal for my book Planet Janitor--Custodian of the Stars, because he think EA will eat it up. He's got the connections with them, so I'm pleased about that.

I've been off gaming for about a year. Feels great, but yesterday I had to play CS for the first time in a long while. I had an urge to shoot something.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Valkyria Chronicles. I'm technically still playing Final Fantasy XIII too, but I found it really disappointing and haven't touched it in weeks.

Purchased Red Dead Redemption about three weeks ago and it has basically engulfed my life. 30 hours in and just at 36.01% of the game completed. Now that is what I call putting some man hours in! I love it!

Dead Rising 2 (PS3)
Sports Champions (PS3)
Buzz! Brain Bender (PSP)
The Warriors (XBOX)
Ultimate Spider-Man (XBOX)

I have too many games to play at the moment I still have PS3 games I've barely played and I still have Red Dead Redemption to finish which I've nearly done. I've just been playing some games on the XBOX as I just picked up a XBOX at a car boot sale on Sunday I've never had the original XBOX until now.

Samurai Jack: The Amulet of Time (GBA) - Playing it a second time as I was transported back to the beginning upon beating it and still wanted to continue upgrading my status. It really takes me back to my senior year of high school, when I originally played it. The map is pretty linear, but it's still a fun Metroidvania.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (DS) - Wonderful Metroidvania! The combination of dark atmosphere/plot and costumed heroes/villains makes this one great for Halloween, as games in the genre tend to be. The bosses are almost impossible to fight through regular means, but there's always a way to spam them.

Suikoden III (PS2) - i can't help but love this game...i didn't initially like it when i bought it years ago, but it grew on me pretty fast. currently playing through to collect screenshots and the like.

Panzer Dragoon Saga (SAT) - it's beaten. but i can't stop playing. i'm trying to get 100% complete on everything in the game. it's nice remembering a time when a good game could make me want to perfect it without needing to bribe me with achievements or trophies.

Saturn Bomberman (SAT) - having fun playing through the single-player mode. when i get bored with that, the multiplayer is fun...both with friends and/or with multiple ai computer opponents. hands-down, the best bomberman game ever made in my humble li'l opinion.
astro_man23 13 years, 7 months ago at Oct 2 0:45 -
I missed out on PDS when it first came out and now I really want to play it. The only thing stopping me is the $300 price tag (not that I'm against dropping that kind of dough on a gem). I have heard from several people that it is worth every cent.

Now I'm playing Heavy Rain and am thinking of using the Move to see how it plays with that.

I also learned of a way to play Fatal Frame IV on the Wii with an English translation without modding anything on the console...so that's next for sure.

Bomberman games' multiplayer modes are so fun... I used to play a demo of Bomberman World with friends for hours on end, and it was just the same multiplayer level that I was going through over and over. Great replay value there.

this is my first attempt at 'quoting' on here...hopefully i don't come across as a fool.

...well, more so than usual.

i actually got it for $10 at a garage sale a month or so ago. i had to hide my excitement as i bought it for so cheap. after playing it all the way through, i think i would have dropped $300 for it. even after all of these years since its release, there still isn't a game out there like it. it feels very, very unique. my only complaint is that it's a tad too short for my liking. i think i beat it on my first playthrough in 13 or 14 hours. but it does live up to the hype of being known as the 'greatest saturn game of all-time', in my opinion.

suppose i should include what i've been playing this week since that's what this thread is about...

WWF Wrestlefest (Arcade) - A childhood favorite, and one of the few arcade games that I absolutely love that never made it to a home console. Played it to nab some screenshots...Then continued to play it afterward 'cause it's just plain fun.

Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night (iPhone) - It went on sale this week, dropping down to $1.99 in the US store, I believe. I got it and have had trouble putting it down. It's basically Symphony of the Night, complete with the RPG elements, re-made in puzzle form. It's kind of an odd creation, which might be why I love it so far.

Toukon Inoki Michi: Puzzle de Daa! (Playstation 2) - Another odd puzzle game...Which also happens to be another wrestling game. It's a Japanese-exclusive puzzle game for the PS2 revolving around the Japanese wrestling legend, Antonio Inoki and select members of the New Japan Pro Wrestling roster, like Jushin Liger and Hiroyoshi Tenzan. It's similar to Puzzle Fighter, but with difficulty cranked up a bit. I'm still exploring all of the modes and such, but it's a neat little game for fans of wrestling and puzzle games alike.

$10 for Panzer Dragoon Saga - that's got to be one of the best finds ever. I can just imagine the dilemma running through your mind as you contemplate whether or not to inform the owner that he has a very valuable game in his possession. And then not doing it.

10-15 hours is the ideal game length for me. Whenever side quests or online matches are involved, though, 99 hours is usually what ends up happening. I had to get rid of ModNation Racers because it was consuming ALL of my spare time for that very reason. So much time gone....

Anyway,
I am now playing a WiiWare game called LIT, which is a puzzle-horror game (more puzzle than horror). It's a fun and unique game that takes place in a haunted school. You have to create a path for the character to walk using light from various sources without stepping in the shadows.

I'm also on Dementium: the Ward for NDS. I don't know why i waited so long to play this one.

I'm still waiting for Fatal Frame IV to come in from Tokyo, but once it does my friend, it's gonna be an old-fashioned all nighter.

I'm also getting to see Fragile Dreams. My girlfriend is playing it now. It is a really beautiful and colorful game. Plus you can play it in Japanese with subtitles.

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King (GBA) - Yes, another Metroidvania. =P I actually got all the way to the final boss (Oogie Boogie, who else?) about a year ago but got stuck. I picked it up again and, after a little effort, found the two boss battles to be not too difficult if you stay on your toes.

Metroid (GBA) - Playing it via the Classic NES Series cart. I can appreciate that it's an extremely important game that set the groundwork for non-linear sidescrolling and all, it's just a little frustrating how I have to follow a walkthrough because I can't tell what to do next and there's no map for reference or plot to hint at what comes next... Of course, this game has the excuse that back then the maps and dialogue in platformers revolution hadn't taken place quite yet.

I'd like to play this one as Castlevania's my favorite series. I don't mind puzzlers, I just don't prefer them. But the nature of these recent CV releases on various platforms is a little irksome for someone who sticks primarily to Nintendo handheld systems.

i have absolutely no evidence that this will happen, it's just speculation on my end, but i think i could see this game being ported to the console/handheld download services like xbox live, psn, and wii ware/ds ware somewhere down the line...especially if it sells well in the smart phone market.

normally, i let people know how much the game is worth and then try to give them a reasonable, but still cheaper-than-value offer with the idea in mind that they get more money than expected and i get a game cheaper than what it goes for...but in this particular case, the guy selling it was kind of a jerk. while i was looking at how good of shape the case and inserts were, he started ranting about how the items were there for sale, not for looking at. so, i quietly handed him $10 and went on my merry way.

and today i started to play another arcade game...

Rollergames (Arcade) - though it shares the name and some of the teams and characters from the nes brawler, this is a completely different game...and honestly, when i got rollergames on nes when i was a kid, this is the game that i was hoping for; a roller derby game. it's not perfect, but it's still fun...and it brings me some nostalgia from watching roller derby shows as a kid.

what did you guys think about the new castlevania demo on PSN? i played it last night and got the feeling it was trying to be like well, too much like God of War to be honest.

I'd love that. This game along with Shantae: Risky's Revenge (DSiware), Cave Story (DSiware and Wiiware), and Sonic 4 (Wiiware and other systems I don't own) will really motivate me to open up to virtual stores.

I don't have a PlayStation 3 or PSP, but that's the general feeling I see on most forums. Castlevania is one of those series that's had trouble holding its own in the 3D setting. Personally, I think they should do something relatively unique that complements the series' main elements, so maybe the God of War format will work the same way the Metroid formula worked in CV: Symphony of the Night.

P.S. Have you gotten around to playing Sonic 4 yet, astro?
astro_man23 13 years, 6 months ago at Oct 11 20:19 -
not yet. i do most of my downloadin on the PSN, which should have it tomorrow in sha'allah.

based on the latest teaser, it looks like they went with the original Sonic look for some of the levels which looks promising.

btw, PSN finally opened up a Japanese import store for PS1 classics. and i have heard a rumor that sony might get rights to some games in the saturn catalog and put them up for download. panzer dragoon saga on PS3??

Kirby & the Amazing Mirror (GBA) - This has to be my instant favorite Metroidvania besides Symphony of the Night. The levels are creatively designed, requiring specific copy abilities for alternate routes; and branching off in every direction while maintaining a wholeness to them, giving the player lots to explore and various ways of going about doing so. The effort put into this game really shows, the presentation being just as good as any Kirby game - though the gameplay is where it's really all at.

My birthday's coming up, so come the date I'll treat myself to a few of the following games on my wishlist:
1) Mega Man Zero Collection (DS)
-A compilation of Mega Man Zero and its three sequels.
2-3) Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent (DS)
-Sequels to the Mega Man Zero series, Mega Man ZX and Mega Man ZX Advent take the Metroidvania route I'll bet you guys can tell I specialize in.
4) Sonic Colors (DS)
-The only non-Metroidvania on this list. I love how the whole game takes place in a theme park sort of a world. I only hope the Wisps' abilities add to the game rather than seeming forced into it.
5) Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (DS)
-I just found out about this one a few days ago. It sounds like it takes the engine used in Web of Shadows and shake it up a bit, giving the player three different Spider-Men to play as in their respective universes.
6) Monster Tale (DS)
-The only game on my list not yet out. To be released next year, this one looks like it'll be a refreshing take on the Metroidvania genre. It follows the trend the Castlevania series has created with Harmony of Despair and Encore of the Night by adding a neat little twist: a virtual pet aspect to the game. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
7) Metroid: Other M (Wii)
-The only game on my list not for the Nintendo DS. It's received mixed reviews, the main complaint as well as the main praise being its integration of first-person shooting and third-person gameplay in addition to 2D platforming. It also goes deeper into Samus's backstory. I want to play all the earlier Metroids before I purchase this one, however.

I just had to get that out there for future reference. When they're all scattered in your head what you want to purchase it helps to organize them in a list, something you guys probably understand well. I'm writing up some reviews for the games I've been playing and will publish a themed list on them come the holiday season.

after having a few people on here suggest it to me, i've finally got around to playing 'deadly premonition' a.k.a. 'red seeds profile'. i've got to say that while i really enjoy the tone of the game, the story, and the somewhat sandbox-style gameplay of roaming around the town and doing side-missions....there are also a lot of gameplay-related flaws to it. i think the good outweighs the bad so far, though.

also, i've got a theory as to who 'did it', which i've had since the lumbermill area in the beginning of the game...so far, i still think that i'm right with my guess, but i suppose we'll see. i said the same thing about 'heavy rain' and ended up being wrong hehe. i guess i'll find out soon enough.
ape 13 years, 6 months ago at Oct 24 9:29 -
finished deadly premonition...i was correct on who i thought the raincoat killer was, but i'll admit that the game also tossed a curve in the end that, looking back, i should have seen coming, but didn't. if that sounds vague, good. don't wanna spoil anything for anyone. :)

anyway, i'm currently playing super meat boy on xbox live arcade until i can figure out which horror-themed game i'll be playing next in honor of halloween.

Metroid II: Return of Samus (Game Boy) - I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than the NES original. The fact that you don't have to bring your health bar up from 30 every time you play helps make it easier to pick up and play after turning it off. I also found the Metroid count to be an interesting gameplay dynamic which made the whole experience more unified and fun. Altogether I think Team Metroid improved on the formula from the first, but most importantly they made this installment a bit more fun.
ape 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 1 9:46 -
Alan Wake (Xbox 360) - actually just finished it...beat it in a day. started playing it in the afternoon, took a few pause breaks during the game, and finished it late night/early morning just a few hours later. i thought it was good, but not quite worth some of the hype that i'd seen for it.

Stupid Invaders (Dreamcast) - i'd beaten this point-and-click adventure game before, but i wanted to make screenshots for it. since i already knew what i needed to do, i managed to plow through the game in about 3 hours...i think last time i played, i spent at least double that trying to figure out what i needed to do to advance on. while it's not the best game in the world, i forgot how much i appreciate some of its humor.

and with halloween now over, i'll likely go back to playing...

Suikoden III (Playstation 2) - saw an opening in my screenshot-making process, and took it so i could get some horror-based and supernatural-based games played to get into the halloween spirit of things. but now halloween is over, and i've still had a ways to go before i reach the end of this game. so, i'll be back to it until i manage to get screenshots and video footage of the ending.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue (Game Boy) - This one's very full of innovation of the Metroidvania formula. It featured a viewable map even before Super Metroid, and switching between characters long before Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. Using the different turtles with their unique abilities is fun, and the difficulty keeps things interesting. I really enjoyed Radical Rescue, up until the very end when all of the game's bosses must be defeated one after another, followed by Cyber Shredder. I have yet to make it to the Cyb-ster.

Fallout: New Vegas (Playstation 3) - only a few hours into it, but it seems like it’s just more of the same (not that that’s a bad thing) with minor new additions. it also seems to like to crash and freeze just as much as fallout 3 did...so, i suppose i’ll have a bunch of frustrated moments of losing progress due to glitches to even out some of the fun.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - I've made my way through the Adventure Mode The Subspace Emissary and enjoyed it a lot, especially The Great Maze. I still need to go back and get the last three characters, but there's always time for that later. I want all the characters unlocked by the time Christmas comes around and my family and I are all gathered together just needing something for everyone to do.

My favorite characters to play as are Meta Knight, Pit, Marth, Snake, Samus, and Lucario (generally in that order).

I had to pick up Super Smash Bros. Brawl to get Fatal Frame IV to work on my U.S. Wii. It looks kinda fun but I haven't played it yet. It would be pretty boss to see Snake shoot Link in the head with a SOCOM.

It's very fun. I've had trouble jumping in Super Smash Bros. games in the past, and keeping up with the constant action in them. But this one has smooth controls (for a game where up on the directional pad is for jumping), and the developers intentionally slowed down the action in Brawl so that it's easier to follow and less about button mashing. The last stage in The Subspace Emissary is in the vein of the Metroid series and recent installments of the Castlevania series.

Duck Tales (Game Boy) - Somehow I beat this game in middle school - I can't remember how. I've been playing it for a week on Normal difficulty, and it's pretty hard. The stages (particularly the jumps) are the hardest part, while the bosses are pretty easy. It certainly helped that I still remember most of the game's secrets and level layouts. It was fun altogether, which made playing it over and failing time and again less of a drag.
ape 13 years, 5 months ago at Nov 21 13:22 -
i'm done with fallout: new vegas for now. i'm at the end, but got a glitch that won't let me complete the game. soooo, i'll wait 'til i get word about a new patch to (hopefully) clear up the problem before i start it back up.

the game is very fun...but almost more trouble than it's worth. i had the game freeze up on me three times within fifteen minutes, making me restart the system each time...and one of those times, the game froze on the title screen. i really wish they would have taken the time to work out the bugs rather than rush out a product as buggy as this.

anyway, sorry, just had to get all that off my chest. :)

with fallout out of the picture for now, and the fact that i've learned how to take screenshots with an ipod touch, i'm playing a lot of ipod/iphone games in order to grab screens.

Power Pros Touch (IP) - a really good baseball game for the iphone. i have the old version, which i don't think is even available in the itunes store anymore. they've come out with a new version of the game with an mlb license.

Dance Dance Revolution S+ (IP) - a 'free' game from konami that includes three songs and has the ability for you to purchase more songs to add to the game at your leisure. it's quite fun and manages to capture the fun of the console versions and squish it down into handheld fun for your fingers to dance to.

Match Match (IP) - a neat little puzzle game that i stumbled on a while back. it's a mixture of "don't let the screen fill up"-style puzzle game with a "match the picture" element added in. it's unique and pretty fun in small doses.

Giana Sisters (IP) - i would call this a well-done game, except the controls are iffy...and by that, i mean that i think the 'touch area' that signifies you hitting a button on the screen should be larger. when i'm struggling to jump out of the way of an enemy or onto a small platform, i don't want to be frantically tapping around an area trying to find the jump button 'sweet spot'. that gripe aside, it's still fun (albeit frustrating) and a neat addition to the giana sisters game franchise.

(edit: found a way around the glitch and finished new vegas...still not too pleased about the trouble i had to go through to do it, though.)
