What games are you playing?

ape 12 years, 10 months ago at Jul 9 15:06 -
Just wondering with as much gaming as you guys seem to do, do you all ever experience any of those symptoms in the warning section of the game manuals? I'm not being a smartass. I'm actually just curious, because sometimes I do, usually when I'm sitting 12ft or less from the TV. Although, once I had some weird visual auras after playing the DSi for a few hours, and that's usually held, what, about 1-2 ft from your eyes? Very unpleasant if you've ever gone through something similar.

The only thing I get is if I play a game like Katamari Damacy, with bright colors, my eyes seem to blink less often...So, my eyes begin to tear up and feel itchy and dry. When that happens, I just get up and do something else for a few hours. The motion sickness and spasms and all that stuff in the warning sections have never happened to me.

And onto what I'm playing now...

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - Enjoying it so far, but honestly, it could be better. They had some neat improvements, but also left in problems that have arisen with age...Like how the once great targeting system is just a pain in the keister to use now. I'm also struggling with the 3DS itself, as I have pretty large hands and I'm finding my hands in pain and all cramped up after playing this for an hour or so. That all being said, I'm still enjoying this one...I guess I was just hoping for more than when Nintendo delivered.

Tomba! (Playstation) - Played it back when it first came out, but never beat it. So, I felt like taking the time to make the attempt now...Besides, I wanted to get some more screenshots of the game, which I'm in the process of getting.

I often get dizzy when I've been sitting down playing on my DS for long enough. That may not be entirely due to the video game though.

Is it non-linear like I've heard? Because straight is the new ultraviolet (ie, it's out).

Someday I may ask you to get some screenshots for me. In the fairly distant future, at the earliest. Would you mind?

Alice in Wonderland (Nintendo DS) - This is certainly what one would call an artsy game. The whole thing - being inspired by but not based on the 2010 Tim Burton movie - is a very eccentric trip. The touch screen is used for everything, which is refreshing. However, hauling Alice around as any of her four protectors the whole game can wear on one's patience at times, like when she needs help climbing a ledge. This is a big part of the gameplay, of course, and the whole thing wouldn't be the same without it. Still, it does make one think Alice pretty useless, even in her role in slaying the Jabberwocky. Playing this game was certainly a new experience for me due to its touch-controlled focus, the unique character abilities, and the ingenious puzzle/map, but it just didn't quite do for me what the game I played after it did.

See a more complete review HERE.

Wario: Master of Disguise (Nintendo DS) - Okay, so Wario Land 2 was pretty darn high on my list of all-time favorite video games. But this one beats it by just a few places. Though reviews are mixed regarding this one, and I've yet to see a perfect review for it, and I must acknowledge the touch screen-based platforming is not for everyone, this is the most fun I've had in a long time playing a video game. Symphony of the Night is still my favorite game in this explorative platformer sub-genre, but this game is easily second. The puzzles can all be done with a little cognitive exertion and the bosses are challenging and lots of fun (except for the final boss, which is insane). The graphics, too, are gorgeous, and the music - though not too memorable - is great to listen to during the levels. The story is the only place where this game didn't live up to my preferences, as it's silly in a geared-toward-kids way.

Tomba! is kind of non-linear, as you kind of have to wander around and backtrack in order to figure out how to advance...But, from what I've seen so far, there's really no branching point where you can do what you want, aside from picking and choosing little side-quests.

As for screenshots, I'm making some for myself eventually. When I do, I don't mind sharing.

As for what I'm playing right now...

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 5th Anniversary Edition (Playstation 3) - It's basically a glorified 'Game of the Year' Edition with fancy packaging and a few extras like a 'making of' DVD included....But it was enough to inspire me to want to play again. Playing this again reminds me why I loved this game so much in the past and why I'm really, really looking forward to Skyrim when it comes out later this year.

Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever & Friends (3DS) - Call me crazy, but I loved the first Nintendogs. I've only put a few minutes into this one so far, but I have a feeling I'll be falling in love with this one, too. I suppose only time will tell, eh?

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Playstation Portable) - I'm back playing this one again. I did my bad habit of sensing the end of the game, 'causing me to quit playing to prevent the end from happening. Weird logic, I know. I've got problems. But, I'm getting back to it...Currently about to go through the whole mako reactor flashback from the original FF7...Where Sephiroth goes nuts and all that fun stuff. I'm assuming story-wise this is likely the end of the game. Suppose I'll see.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 5th Anniversary Edition (Playstation 3) - Still playing this...110+ hours into it...still haven't even begun the main quest yet...still haven't done any of the add-on content....still a long way before I'm done...Which is both good and bad...Good 'cause I'm enjoying it. Bad because I've got a long line of stuff that needs to be played and Oblivion is keeping me from them.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (iPhone) - I absolutely loved this game on the DS. The iPhone/iPod Touch version has reminded me why I loved it so much. It's not just a boring court simulation...It's loaded with personality and I just find it to be a joy to play. I've only completed the first case so far, but it seems to be pretty faithful to the original one. I haven't played a game on the iPod Touch in months, but ol' Phoenix Wright has pulled me out of that slump.

I wasn't as into these three games, though at least for the first and third ones I found a good amount of merit in them.

Metroid: Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance) - This has to be the best emulation (that's the word, not the illegal activity) of Super Metroid's formula out of all the Metroids. However, this also means that it's derivative and there's little brought to the table. At least Metroid Fusion used a new engine, had a great story, and updated a lot of little things. This one does have a part later in the game where the player has to go an area with just her Zero suit, which makes one feel more in dire isolation than in any series title since the original Metroid. Zero Mission also serves as a great celebration of the series as a whole. Just not an altogether creative new addition to it.

See a more complete review HERE.

Spider-Man (Game Boy Color) - It's always great to play as Spidey - he's one licensed character whose transfer to the video game world has lead to some truly unique gameplay. Unfortunately for this game, the controls hinder his movement, as jumping and web-slinging are clunky and any normal attacks are ineffective in downing enemies. The only way bosses can be handled with anything relative to ease is by shooting offensive webbing at them, an ability which fortunately is gained early on. The level designs are boring, and the graphics only pretty when it comes to super characters like Spider-Man, Venom, Dr. Octopus, etc. At least their sprites were done justice. There's a level up system, and one can attain different power-ups aside from this, but navigating the dull, repetitive, confusing areas with the clunky controls to get them is a chore - and that's if you know where you're going. The story is simplistic and features the basic plot points already gone over many times in the Spider-Man franchise - Dr. Conners turns into The Lizard and the wall-crawler has to figure out how to return him to his human form without killing him; Venom appears out of nowhere, and the two fight with webhead being the victor - and later, of course, red-and-blue finds out that Venom was just trying to warn him of the real threat. Even though Spidey's sense doesn't work on symbiotic Eddie Brock, he'll come onto the scene in a way that's not lead up to or placed into the story at an appropriate time - just, "Venom!", and there he is! I'm glad Griptonite went back to the concept of creating an non-linear exploration-based Spidey game, because they really did a great job with their two games (Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions) which really show off all the great controls the character's great for.

See a more complete review HERE.

Wario Land: Shake It! (Nintendo Wii) - This isn't a bad game - the platforming is quite fun - but it's not up to Wario Land snuff. There aren't really any alternate states for Wario to take on, beyond the occasional Fire Wario or Snowball Wario. The basic concept of racing back to the beginning of the level at the end at a time limit is straight from Wario Land 4, so even that fun aspect to the game isn't original to it. The really positive things I can say is that: The boss fights are incredibly fun; the platforming in itself is solid and doesn't have any gaping flaws; finally, the motion controls add some great interactivity that was never present in any other Wario games. The Wario Land series is a one that has changed and gone through cycles, so hopefully the next one will enter a new arena as far as gameplay factors go. Hopefully Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Virtual Boy Wario Land can get released on the 3DS store sooner rather than later so newer gamers can discover the series' roots and begin urging Nintendo to create another classic to add to it.

And that concludes my summer gaming.

Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes del Ring (Playstation 3) - It's a so-so wrestling game that isn't as fast as a lucha libre game should be, and a game where button-mashers will be throwing controllers. Being a wrestling nerd, I enjoyed my time playing a wrestling game based off of the AAA promotion in Mexico...But take away that nerdiness and it's a little-below-average wrestling game that could definitely use a few improvements if a sequel ever gets made.

Final Fantasy XIII (Playstation 3) - I've actually had a few folks ask me my opinion on this game over the past few weeks...And I didn't have one. Now I've begun to play it. I'm roughly 3 or so hours in. The first two hours I found to be boring and confusing...I could not, for the life of me, understand why there was no experience or leveling up to be seen. I was afraid this was going to be like Ghost Lion on the NES, where the battles were pointless since they didn't make you stronger. Then, events happen that allow you to level up, use magic, etc. and things begin to get a little more fun. I'm not really impressed so far...But, I have an open mind....Especially considering I'm still early enough into the game where tutorials are still popping up. Afterall, Suikoden V took nearly 10 hours before it picked up, and it ended up being one of my all-time favorites by the time I was done...So, we'll see.

Math Alchemist (iPhone) - I stumbled across this a few months ago and only now just started to play it...And I'm hooked. It's a very simple game. You have four numbers, each one is a number 1-9. You've also got the four basic math symbols for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Your goal is to reach the number specified by doing math problems with the four numbers. I probably explained that poorly, but it's an addicting game worth getting if you like to exercise your brain a bit while on the go.

Pokemon Sapphire (Game Boy Advance 2002)

Stopped right before the second battle with - in my case - May, at Route 110. I had a lot of fun with this game when I started it, but have quit for a little while because I got tired of grinding all the time. I'm sure I'll pick it up eventually and finish it up. Basically, it's a very solid effort and has some great graphical updating, but nothing quite so earth-shattering to the formula to keep me going. The running shoes make the early parts of the game extremely convenient, and the double battles are exciting and should have been used more, but this is pretty much the same thing as Gold/Silver. Now when I say this keep in mind I last played a main Pokemon game about ten years ago, and that was Gold and Silver. So when you hear that this game isn't a new experience for me, that means that Sapphire didn't do enough for me even though I haven't played a Pokemon game for a decade. With so many versions of the same game coming out - two of the exact same overall game, and then an update a little later with updates that should have been included in the original to begin with - Game Freak can't afford to use up their waitlist of available colors on entries that are essentially the older games in a new skin. I mean, it brought back a lot of old memories... Just didn't make too many new ones.

When I play another game, I'll try to make it one I'll be more into so you guys don't have to put up with all my negative mojo.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (Nintendo DS) - I'm a statistic nerd. I love looking at stats and records. So, upon seeing that the 3DS has software that logs how much time you put into games, I became curious if it also logged time for specific DS games or if I'd just get a generic "DS Game" stat. Considering a local KMart was closing and everything went on sale, I felt that the newly-purchased DQM: Joker would be a nice test subject for this experiment. I'm pleased to say that it logs time for each individual DS game you play...Which means I'll likely be putting a lot of time into this handheld again as I nerdily (it's not a word, but it should be...it's fun to say) log in statistics so I can compare total play times, play time averages, number of times played, etc.

Random Atari 2600 Games - Atari 2600 games are not generally games that were made for playing for extended periods of time. So, for that reason, I'm listing them all as a whole rather than try and list them all off...I've probably playing somewhere between 10-15 Atari 2600 games over the past week or so. I still find it amazing how simple some of these games can sometimes be, while still being quite fun.

Mega Man Zero (Game Boy Advance 2002) - The controls for this game are silky smooth - I found myself doing dashes and wall slides just because I darn well felt like it. Thus, even during the harder parts playing it is a joy. And about the difficulty - I didn't find it to be that bad so long as one uses Cyber Elves. The game got progressively easier for me as I fed, downloaded, and used them, in fact. I'd compare this game's difficulty to that of the two Shaman King: Master of Spirits games. Hard, but not anything close to the original Castlevania or other games that actually give one a run for their money. Mega Man Zero has really gotten me interested in playing the original and X series, which I'll probably have to do via Virtual Console (if I can get that set up sometime soon). Previously, I've only played Mega Man 6, which was great but apparently didn't add anything new to the series.

See a more complete review HERE.

What to play next? I have some ideas, but nothing set in stone.

Also, all my comments made in this list have been transferred into list format here. That should make scanning through them easier - I know I'll be looking at it for easy reference!

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (3DS) - With October almost here, I'm trying to shift the kind of games I play into ones that fit in with the Halloween spirit. The first game in that mold is Devil Survivor. I liked it on the DS, and I like it just as much here. Not really sure why they decided to remake this for a 3D handheld and only make the start menu and intro video 3D, with everything else (that I've seen so far) not compatible with the gimmick for the system, but since I tend to turn the 3D off for the most part, it doesn't really bother me.

Resident Evil (Playstation) - I've played it, but never beaten it. I plan on changing that. In fact, I've fallen into my usual slump of not completing games and moving onto new ones recently. I'm hoping that between Resident Evil and Devil Survivor, I'm motivated enough start seeing the credits roll at the end of games again.

I played the following game partly for research purposes and because I'm having to busy myself until I can scrounge up enough money to get Monster Tale for the DS.

New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo DS 2006) - I was playing this game primarily because I thought it would wow me with its updated Mario controls, and consequently end up in a list I'm working at. And the basic updates - the introduction of Mega, Mini, and especially Shell Mario, ground pounds and wall jumps - are appreciated. Still, the levels don't offer anything exciting or "new" from what has already been covered in previous games. But the worst part? The momentum. You can't walk in any direction and turn around without continuing in the first direction for at least a few feet. A similar predicament is experienced when jumping. This fundamental gameplay aspect makes the game somewhat painful to play, the player not being able to direct Mario as desired and whatnot. I mean, how could Nintendo screw up walking?

The list I'm working on is Best Controls in Platformers, which can be found here, there, and everywhere.

Man, I haven't gamed in a while. I'm so looking forward to my next long break.
I'm going to celebrate the last of the warm days laid out, wearing nothing but trunks and sun screen, and playing PSone games on my PSP till I either give myself an epileptic seizure or pass out drunk in a kiddie pool full of ice and empty beer cans.

New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo DS) - I got back to playing this game, getting to the point just before Bowser's gigantic castle in the Halloween world. Mind you, I haven't unlocked the two secret worlds. My big beef isn't with walking anymore, as I've found it's not that bad. What I'm irritated with are two other things: 1) Jumping, which is floaty - not to mention that a direction can't be changed to any agreeable extent, and 2) Saving, which can't be done except after beating a castle. I assume saving can be done at any point once the game's been cleared once so players can go back and get all the large coins and the like. I just wonder why anyone would bother with giving Mario such an update, complete with a plethora of awesome new abilities and power-ups, and not make his jumping more controllable.

Sonic Colors (Nintendo DS) - Not much to say here, except that I've been using Infinite Boost to get S ranks on as many courses as I can manage. I haven't gotten through them all in this way by a long shot, and have avoided two or three really difficult ones for the time being. This mostly gives me an excuse to enjoy the game's controls and own every level now that I have Infinite Boost.

Pokemon Sapphire (Game Boy Advance) - I've made a lot of progress with this one. I'm right before facing the sixth gym leader, and have left the game with intent to train my Pokemon to at least level 45 before I fight her next time I pick it up.

Now on to some games I haven't played already.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (NES) - Playing this game while trying to rush might make this game seem difficult...But when you take your time, the hardest part is choosing the correct character to make jumps with, as each character jumps different heights and distances. But anyway, it's not a very good game, but I wanted to play through it just to say that I did. I did.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (3DS) - Still playing it. Just leveling up right now to get new demons and be strong enough to face the next Bel. I'm assuming I'm near the end of the game, as I'm almost level 70 and haven't done a whole lot of grinding to get there. I'm really enjoying it, but it's not much different from the DS version...Unless you're a SMT nut that wants both versions, like myself, I don't really see much of a reason to get this version over the DS version. The DS version is probably cheaper at this point, too.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record (Playstation 3) - Haven't played much of this yet, but I really enjoyed my time with Dead Rising 2, so I imagine that playing this as Frank West will be just as enjoyable. I'm hoping that there's enough change here to help prevent this feel like a simple re-hash of the original Dead Rising 2...I suppose that time will tell.

Tell me... Is first-person dungeon crawling fun, ape? I've only ever played the GBA version of Eye of the Beholder, and that was ages ago.

Drawn to Life (Nintendo DS) - Creating one's own character(s) to play as is undoubtedly the coolest thing about this game. Three can be stored up; I only used one, which was a faithful port of one of my personal creations from my art binder. So yeah, it's pretty satisfying to see one of your very own characters be brought to life. Other than than, this game has pretty simple platforming - nothing too innovative, even when considering all the drawing that plays into it, but fun nonetheless. The final boss is the only thing that really challenges the player, so it's a very calming game overall. I want to play the Wii game next, since I hear the intended order for completing the series is 1st) Drawn to Life (DS), 2nd) Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter (Wii), and 3rd) Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter (DS). The SpongeBob SquarePants version likely has zero or limited continuity with the rest of the series.

Depends on your tastes, I suppose. If you're an RPG nut, you're probably more likely to enjoy that genre more than other folks might. I'd do a little research on a particular game you might have in mind. If it still looks interesting to you, give it a shot. You might like it, you might hate it, but either way you'll know how you feel about the genre.

If you want a few examples of first-person dungeon crawlers that I, personally, enjoy, then let me know and I'll try to come up with a few names.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure (Playstation 3) - I played the game for roughly 30-40 minutes and have stopped temporarily because I feel like exploring and I'm missing some figures to allow me to explore. This is a very unique game where you play as whatever figure you place on a special peripheral that comes with the game. The game comes with three figures, and you've got the option to purchase more in stores all over. My favorite part is that as a game collector, I'm hesitant to open the packages of the figures, but the packages are made so that you don't need to open them to play the game with them. Anyway, I enjoy the game so far...It seems to be aimed towards younger kids, but everything is pretty solid. My only complaint so far is that I feel shackled to the ground, as there isn't a jump button. But that hasn't been too much of an issue yet...I'm just used to a jump button...Playing without one takes me out of my comfort zone a bit. But anyway, I plan on purchasing a few new figures for the game tomorrow (or whenever I get an opportunity to during the week) so I have at least one for each 'element', which will allow me to explore all over without issues. At that point, I'll be continuing on with this unique game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (3DS) - Still playing. Still leveling up. I think I'm at the final battle. I should, hopefully, be done with this one soon. At which time, I may be moving to the 3DS version of Skylanders so I can compare it to its PS3 console counterpart.

Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64) - There's really nothing I can say that isn't positive about this game. It was my all-time favorite game growing up and I must say, it's aged well. Only the graphics seem dated, and I remember them as I remembered them back in the day so I can hardly complain. While I'm also a fan of the Crash Bandicoot series, Super Mario 64 pioneered 3D platforming far beyond anything that would be done with that game. I only played enough so that I could write up a review for the game, but I'd already gotten all 120 stars years and years ago and have many happy memories with the game, so I'm not feeling like I haven't given the game its allotted time.

I honestly don't think that collectors was their reasoning so much as it was to allow folks to put the packages on the 'portal' in the store set-ups to show potential customers how a certain character plays. After putting a package on at the store, I tried it at home and it still worked. Whether it was intentional for collectors or not, it worked out in our favor. :)

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Playstation 3) - I got it at a 24-hour Wal-Mart shortly after the midnight launch on my way home from work. I've played a few hours into it and I've got mixed feelings. I'm not really gonna get into much for right now as I'm feeling everything out and some features that I think are missing, may still be there...But the menu format and everything is completely different than Oblivion, so I'm still getting used to it all. That being said, I'm sure I'll end up putting 100+ hours into this game like I did Oblivion. Whether I feel the game is as good as Oblivion, however, remains to be seen.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure (Nintendo 3DS) - Beat it already, actually...But found a few new Skylanders at Wal-Mart while picking up Skyrim, so I feel the need to test 'em out on the handheld. The PS3 is soley for Skyrim...And will probably stay that way for at least a week or two, so 'til then the Skylanders get to debut on the handheld.

Super Mario Sunshine (Nintendo GameCube) - I haven't gotten close to getting all the Shine Sprites yet, but I intend to within the decade. It's really a lot what with the twenty-four of them that can only be bought with ten blue coins each. Anyway, I've really enjoyed the game. It's certainly a unique take on the Mario universe, and the 3D one at that. I know it's gotten a lot of flack - for what exactly, I'm not sure, but it's gotten flack. I don't understand people being so put off by the FLUDD waterpack gameplay, which I find fun. I really wouldn't want to play Super Mario 64 again; that'd just be boring. I really like the tropical theme, too. I do feel bad for Mario and company, since their vacation was essentially hijacked. At least I can take a vacation playing the game!

I really enjoyed Sunshine, unfortunately, my Game Cube sliding disc tray no longer opens, I have the rare Panasonic-Q Gamecube that also plays DVDs, and it is moded to be region free. I did everything in Sunshine twice, it has replay value. I think it is the best 3D platform game I have ever played.

I'm playing Burgertime, Frogger, Ms Pac-Man and DigDug lately. I want to get into in a game again though I can only play things on my computer. Maybe I will restar Elder Scrolls 3 again or FFVII

A lot of people don't give it as much credit since it came after Super Mario 64 and before Super Mario Galaxy, but I agree, it's very good.

By the way, I added links to the reviews I've done for Super Mario 64 and Sunshine in my previous posts. If you're interested in reading my more definitive analyses of them, that's where you'll find them. I'll be adding the links to the accompanying reviews in future posts as well. =]

All I could recommend would be Aquaria, though it seems to have jumped up in price since I last checked its page - especially for Mac users. Anyway, I've heard nothing but great things about it and have it on my own ever-growing queue... Which I now return to.

Elder Scrolls Skyrim

I have played it for roughly 40 hours so far and I love it. It is quite different from Oblivion and I think much harder in ways. I see myself getting completely lost in this for months and months.

@ APE I know what you mean about how things are changed all around. I play on PC so I am not sure how much is different on PS3 but yes the menu's and things are different. Seems your character is much weaker early on in the game for a longer period of time compared to Oblivion.

The caves, mines, dungeons, etc...definitely are way better and have more character in Skyrim. Can't wait to play more.

You got me jealous for Skyrim but I can't afford anything right now.

Aquaria looks interesting too,

I am, urm fortunate enough to have Super Mario Bros. on my pc, I just went through it straight with no warping, first time in a great many years. Glad I have a control pad for my PC that is pretty much a PS2 control pad.

I actually have intentionally not bought anything in quite sometime so I could justify spending the money for Skyrim! I want the new Uncharted game too but I am going to ask Santa for that LOL.

I haven't purchased a game since Oblivion and that must have been 2-3 years ago now.

I'm used to the menus and everything now...But, I'm very, very disappointed about the hand-to-hand skill going away. My favorite part of Oblivion was boxing my way from beginning to end, with no need to spend money on fancy weapons. Plus, knocking out a fleeing deer by punching it in its can just makes me smile.

I do like how you feel weaker in the beginning of the game, though. It makes you feel like you're gaining progress when you begin to feel like you're no longer an underdog going into battle...Or when you start to feel brave enough to tackle some of the more difficult enemies, like the giants.

I'm roughly 25-30 hours into it right now, and as of right now, I think I like Oblivion more...But Skyrim is growing on me the more I play...And fighting dragons is much more fun to me than closing Oblivion gates...So, who knows, by the time I finish the game, I could be completely smitten with Skyrim.

How is it story wise? Is the voice acting good, are there memorable characters?

I think I am about to play Streets of Rage 4.

Going through AMK mod for Shadow of Chernobyl right now.

Really excited for the mod "Misery" coming out soon for Call of Pripyat.

And as always, sinking endless hours into yet another play of X-Com UFO Defense
