19!!! hahaha, Im well happy with that, I honestly thought it would be diabolically low. I can thank my Charles Dickens obsession for that. But on average I think you're right, I know my family would have read less than 5 and my next door neighbour has only ever read half of 'BFG'...so the stat is probably dead on.

Oh, I saw this a while back on LJ. The one I saw had a bit more rules to it
But I can't remember them and I'm too lazy to look.

2. The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien
4. Harry Potter series - JK Rowling
5. To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
6. The Bible
8. Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell
9. His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman

73. The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett
92. The Little Prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupery
97. The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas
100. Les Miserables - Victor Hugo

Hmmm. Only 17. I'm slacking. There's a bunch though that I've partially/mostly read though but I'm not counting those. And others I've just stuck to the film adaptations because I'm lazy :P

EDIT: Any reason why The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe counts separately from The Chronicles of Narnia? @_@
Personally my favorites from the list are His Dark Materials and The Little Prince, so I'd recommend those.

Line count says that's 57.

Full disclosure: I was an English major.

I know there must be some reason that Hamlet is listed separately from the complete works of Shakespeare. I'd love to know what it is. :)

There are also several on the list I tried to read and threw down in disgust (Mr. Joyce, I'm lookin' at you!).

That's not the same as the Big Read top 100 list that I found on the BBC's site.

[Link removed - login to see]

Using that list, I've read:

9. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
25. The Hobbit
30. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
35. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
36. Treasure Island
46. Animal Farm
53. The Stand
56. The BFG

Plus one or two I can't remember if I've read or not, and a few I own (or did own), but just haven't got round to reading yet.

The list is pretty diverse, though, so it's not really surprising if the average adult has only read a handful. At least half of them wouldn't even be of interest to me.

Half of the books on that list are on my to be read list, a couple in particular I'll be reading in the next few months because they're on my Eng Lit reading list for uni.

I prefer my old school stuff in a nice BBC (or BBC-style) adapation! :P (without American actors)

1. The Lord of the Rings (After I saw the first two movies).
2. The Harry Potter Series (The third movie sold me).
3. The Bible (All my life and better than any movie adaptation I've ever seen although The Passion of the Christ came close...Just my humble opinion).
4. The Hobbit (after reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy).
5. The Chronicles of Narnia Series (Actually I listened to the audio books...does that count?). Again the movie sold me.
6. Moby Dick (Actually I think I read this in a comic book format along with War of the Worlds when I was in grade school....does that count?).
7. Ulysses (Read it once in high school only because it's my first name. I don't remember any of the story except the part when he confronts a cyclops).
8. Hamlet (Read it for english lit. in high school but didn't understand it until I saw a movie adaptation of it some years later).

Yup. I'm just your average guy...nothing to see here.

The trouble with a lot of them on the list, is that i have seen them in film form. I dont like reading things i have already seen, i prefer to see a new story unfold instead of recapping on the old (with the exception of 1 or 2 series')

I should really crack on through that list though!

I am not sure why its different from the BBC one, i stole it from somebodies live journal so perhaps its not the BBC one but another countries or something? I've no idea! Still if people would prefer to go from the other list il count up my tally on there.

Only seen 7 on there, i think thats because Harry Potter is split into 3 on it, and iv read 2 of them. So 1 more than the other list because 1 is split into 2. From the looks of the list most of the books are actually the same, there are 1 or 2 kids books on there, so mayhap all the kiddie ones were removed from the list i had and replaced with adult ones?

I did try and read the bible (out of curiosity) years ago but never made it past the first page. I've tried a couple of others on the list but wasn't interested

I've read 41 of them. Seems a bit of an odd list really. Would anyone choose to read all these books (English students aside)? And why are Hamlet and The Complete Works... listed separately? Same with Chronicles of Narnia and The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. Also, Shakespeare's works are plays, meant to be performed and watched not read.
