Japan, (Japanese: 日本 Nippon or Nihon; formally 日本国 About this sound Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, literally "[the] State of Japan") is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The characters that make up Japan's name mean "sun-origin", which is why Japan is sometimes referred to as the "Land of the Rising Sun".

The Japanese archipelago (Japanese: 日本列島, Nihon Rettō) consists of four major islands—Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu—and 14,121 smaller islands (of which approximately 256 are inhabited), covering 377,975 square kilometres (145,937 sq mi). Japan has a population of nearly 124 million as of 2024, making it the eleventh-most populous country. It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making its islands prone to destructive earthquakes and tsunamis.

Japan is divided into eight traditional regions and 47 administrative prefectures. Three of the regions correspond to three major islands while the other five regions are located on Honshu, Japan's largest island.

A great power and the only Asian member of the G7, Japan has constitutionally renounced its right to declare war, but maintains one of the world's strongest militaries. A developed country with one of the world's largest economies by nominal GDP, Japan is a global leader in the automotive, robotics, and electronics industries, and has made significant contributions to science and technology. It has one of the world's highest life expectancies, though it is undergoing a population decline. Japan's culture is well known around the world, including its art, cuisine, film, music, and popular culture, which includes prominent animation, comics, and video game industries.
