As Japan's economy continued its slow, painful deflation, 1991 also threw in a slew of natural disasters for good measure… because apparently, one crisis at a time just wasn't enough! Besides forces of nature taking their toll, it was the year one of the country's greatest post-war icons passed away. But it was also a year where, despite everything, Japan quietly changed the world, not once, but twice, with two inventions and discoveries whose impact we can still feel every single day.
