Although the album was intended as an experiment (Columbia president Goddard Lieberson was willing to chance releasing it) and received negative reviews by critics upon its release, it became one of the best-known and biggest-selling jazz albums, reaching number two in the U.S. Billboard "Pop Albums" chart, and produced one single — Paul Desmond's "Take Five" — that reached number f ... 500 CDs You Must Own Before You Die! (500 music items)

"The source of the pianist’s hits of the ’50s, this contains “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo à la Turk,” uniting hipsters and squares in admiration for Brubeck. Laconic saxophonist Paul Desmond is the olive in the martini. Standout track: “Take Five”"
