Recording sessions for the album took place during 1992 to 1993 at Firehouse Studio in New York City, and it was mastered at The Hit Factory. The album's title originates from the martial arts film The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978). The group's de facto leader RZA, also known as Prince Rakeem, produced the album entirely with heavy, eerie beats and a sound largely based on martial-arts movie clips and soul music samples. 100 Greatest American Albums of All Time (100 music items)

"New York brings the ruckus (back) The Wu-Tang Clan’s debut had all the earmarks of cultdom — masked rappers, a back story shaped by comics and kung-fu flicks, and grimy beats. Yet the octet’s output was so badass, it drew gangsta rap?jaded hip-hop fans back to New York. Standout tracks: “C.R.E.A.M.,” “Bring Da Ruckus”"

"Take nine chemically imbalanced MCs, lock them in a dingy room with nothing to subsist on but weed and kung fu flicks&133;and you get this Staten Island, New York, crew’s spare, stunning debut of space-age lo-fi funk. Standout track: “C.R.E.A.M.”"
