An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 3 months ago on 22 January 2016 09:17

Since my wife and I both have a weak spot for Hugh Grant, I thought we might as well check his last comedy. Eventually, it wasn’t really good, I’m afraid. Indeed, it was already the 4th movie directed by Marc Lawrence, all starring Hugh Grant, and even though it wasn’t really worse than ‘Did You Hear About the Morgans?’, it wasn’t really far from it. Basically, the main issue I had is that even though the whole thing was rather harmless, it was also really unoriginal, terribly lazy and eventually rather boring. Indeed, the story was so similar to ‘Music and Lyrics’ that you could almost call it a remake. However, even though I always believed that ‘Music and Lyrics’ is a seriously underrated romcom, this movie was just a really weaker version. What amazed me the most was how half-baked the subplots were. Indeed, they kept mentioning the fact that Marisa Tomei and J.K. Simmons both had kids and, yet, those children showed up only once very quickly with no dialogues. There was also the mention that Bella Heathcote’s character had some daddy issues and the most logical thing would be to eventually learn that her father was in fact J.K. Simmons, the head of the department but, no, it was someone else entirely different who never showed up at all in this story. Same thing with the son of Hugh Grant’s character, he was supposed to be a big deal but his involvement didn’t go further than leaving a voicemail message (which we didn’t even get to hear) on his father’s phone . To conclude, even though I have seen worse, I thought it was pretty weak and I don’t think it is worth a look.
