A good movie

Following respectively ‘The Thin Red Line’ and ‘Memento’, James Caviezel and Guy Pearce became hot properties and the studios decided to surf on their new found popularity and make this ambitious period piece. Well, even though I’m not a huge fan of the genre, I thought it was pretty good but, unfortunately, it was a flop and for both those guys their career never became as huge as some thought it would be (personally, I don’t really care, Guy Pearce remains a great actor no matter what). Coming back to our main feature, it is a classic of the French literature (as usual, I didn’t read it but don’t make a fuss about it) written by Alexandre Dumas père, the guy also responsible for ‘The Three Musketeers’. To be honest, even though I’m familiar with this tale, I don’t think I saw another adaptation before and I thought it was a pretty cool adventure flick, one of those flicks they don’t make anymore nowadays. To conclude, even though it is nothing really amazing or groundbreaking, I thought it was a pretty good flick, I really enjoyed it and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Of all the movies I've seen, I have yet to see this until now. I'm glad I watched this, it was splendid! Caviezel's acting was superb and Richard Harris' acting was top notch as well. A great story of vengeance I must say. A must see.
Rating: 8.4/10

The Count of Monte Cristo review

Posted : 13 years, 6 months ago on 29 October 2010 12:01

The Count of Monte Cristo review

What happened to your mercy?"
"I'm a count, not a saint."

Loved this film. I loved the book, but after some of my favorite novels turned into rubbish film adaptations, I wasn't expecting too much. But I was pleasantly surprised after viewing this film. Jim Caviezel plays the title role as the Count of Monte Cristo, who is actually the wrongfully accused sailor, Edmund Dantes. Guy Pearce (The Time Machine), is Fernand, Dantes' best friend and who is secretly in love with Mercedes (Dagmara Dominiczyk), the fiancee of Dantes. In a fit of jealousy, Fernand teams up with Danglars, the shipmate of Dantes, and they expose the supposed support of Dantes for Napoleon Bonaparte. Villefort's (James Frain) father is in fact the traitor, but in order to protect his reputation as Prosecutor, he has Dantes imprisoned for life, fuelled by the information provided by Fernand. Dantes spends 13 years in the Chateau D'If, but there he meets Father Faria (Richard Harris), who teaches him everything from philosophy, sword fighting, and proper etiquette. When Faria is gravely injured while working on their escape tunnel, Dantes takes the priest's place and escapes the prison. Upon taking ownership of the Spada fortune, he transforms himself into the Count of Monte Cristo, and begins his plans for revenge. Caviezel and Pearce provided a good rivalry, and of course, Harris was the perfect Father Faria (although as I recall, he was supposed to be Spanish). Helen McCrory (she plays Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter series) didn't have as much screen time as I hoped she would, but she was still as effective as the wife of Villefort. A good periodic piece, but don't expect it to strictly stick by the novel. ;)

brilliant adaptation

Edmond Dantes (Jim Caviezel) takes what he believes is an innocent letter on behalf of Napoleon. His friend Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce) betrays him. Dantes is sent to the Chateau d'If where he spends many years during which he meets a priest who will teach him to read, to write and many subjects. The priest will also tell him where a certain treasure is buried and with it, Edmond will become the Count of Monte Cristo, and eventually will seek out revenge to those who betrayed him.

To be honest, I didn't expect this to be a great film. At best, I expected an acceptable action film. However, I soon realized that it was a great film! What can you not love: it's comedy, romance, action, drama - all in one movie!

The script was great and has wonderful one-liners: "I'm a priest, not a saint" (and later "I'm a count, not a saint") is one of the best lines of the film.

The actors were all quite credible, and offered nice performances. Luis Guzman probably has the best role as Jacopo, the Count of Monte Cristo's aide.

As for the action, I felt that there weren't enough of it, although the fencing scenes were well done.

A brilliant adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' novel of the same name, I highly recommend this film.

well, one of the best movies i've ever seen, for sure.
sorry by the sucking english of a brazilian thirteen... but whatever...

the movie is everything we DONT expect. the way the guy scape from prision, every thing seem kinda surreal. its a combination of drama, romance, suspence... everything that i particullary LOVE. =)

exciting 'till the end, the sword duels are amazinglly donne, even my father loved.

"i wouldnt let you take this that easlly...." - i think, 'cuz i'm not sure about the translation.

a movie that i could indicate to anyone with a good mind to capture the fast changes that happend.
