At the beginning of the 19th century, Johannes Elias Alder is born in a small village in the Austrian mountains. While growing up, he discovers his love of music, especially playing the organ at the local church, but the other villagers consider him strange. After experiencing an "acoustic wonder," his eye color changes and he is able to hear even the subtlest sounds. Elias loves Elsbeth from afar, but when she eventually marries someone else, Elias decides to end his life by not sleeping anymore.
