That's the main idea of the film, and it's also the only idea. Everything in "Patch Adams" is so sugar-coated, sentimental, and ridiculously black and white that it's hard to believe that it wasn't meant to be a parody. Of course, it wouldn't be a good parody either because parodies are supposed to be funny, but at least then it wouldn't be quite as pretentious. "
