Oliver Twist, a boy born in the poorhouse, lives on the streets. He meets a young thief called the Artful Dodger who introduces him to Fagin - leader and teacher of a gang of youthful pickpockets. Oliver, however grateful for being taken in, is not a thief and cannot live like one.
