Decent sequel, but inferior to the first film.

The first film was very entertaining, with some well-choreographed sword fights and a witty script. The sequel while entertaining on the most part, is definitely inferior in comparison. What I did like about the sequel was the cinematography, it was very handsome like in the first film. The performances from Banderas and Zeta Jones are impressive , not so much the boy who played their son. (can't remember his name). The costumes were lovely The script wasn't too bad, but a little underdeveloped at times. I will confess I was disappointed in the sword fights, they seemed more like slapstick and a little too clumsy to my liking. The main flaw was the plot, it was a very good idea, but it felt rushed, and it felt as though the director was trying to cram too much into a simple storyline. I also wished they made the villains, played adequately by Rufus Sewell and Michael Emerson, more interesting. I liked the music by James Horner, but you do wish sometimes in the more dramatic scenes, that Hans Zimmer would have been a more appropriate choice. Overall, not bad, but doesn't hold a candle to the first film. 6/10 Bethany Cox.

The Legend of Zorro review

Posted : 5 years, 10 months ago on 25 June 2018 06:49

This movie is a complete joke.

First of all, most characters are underdeveloped and cartoonish. We have the annoying and chaplinesque 6 years old kid, who likes to talk about the opression of peasants like a maniac political activist. When "mini Marx" is not yelling big worlds, he kicks trained soldiers in the butt, and escapes every "dangerous" situation like it was nothing. Hard to take the henchman seriously when a kid can outsmart them!
Lets talk about the villains. We have all the evil europeans (THE EVIL FRENCHMAN)! Guess what? They want to destroy America (for reasons you know...). Banderas overacts every scene. It is like watching a silent era movie... C. Zeta-Jones and Banderas has no chemistry at all.

Second the flick is riddled with historical error. This movie is set in 1850!
They talk about The Confederate States of America! What? Did the writer skipped some of their history classes? Most likely, because the Confederate States of America will form later (and I mean more than a decade later)! The flags ('Bear' flag), uniforms, the voting system (they did not use privacy booths), the weapons ("Henry" rifles really?), the damned railroad (should not exist at all yet), and the Pinkertons (they were a private detective agency at that time, not goverment), Slovenia (It was part of Austria-Hungary, and was NOT a country) just to name a "few"... It's almost like they deliberately did all these errors, but sadly we know they are just completely incompetent.

Watch the first for light entertainment, skip this one...

A disappointing movie

Honestly, the first Zorro movie surprised me and I thought it was actually pretty good. Unfortunately, this sequel was rather disappointing. First of all, for some obvious reasons, Anthony Hopkins didn't show up this time and I missed him. Furthermore, the story was rather convoluted. Indeed, I thought it was rather boring to see Zorro and his wife constantly arguing about his retirement, it was supposed to be funny but it was rather annoying. i understand also that they tried this time to put the focus on Catherine Zeta-Jones and involve her in some kind of spy story but the plot was just really tedious and actually quite boring. I watched it again the other day and I must admit that Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones both tried very hard and gave some solid performances but the whole thing was rather long and boring this time. To conclude, even though a sequel was inevitable, the end result was pretty average and the whole thing is not really worth a look, even if you liked the first movie.
