A disappointment

Posted : 10 years, 4 months ago on 20 December 2013 08:13

Tom Hanks doesn't do a lot any more, he acts much more than he directs and here he directs a bland bore

'Larry Crowne' is a disappointment because of it's completely boring story, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts give decent performances but completely waste their talent

But what a lame plot! The main character gets fired and his neighbour suggets going to college for the first time. So far so good, but then he joins a motorcycle group and he also falls for his teacher! Not very funny or consistent and really weak

It is well directed (boring movies aren't usually badly directed) but Tom Hanks should have directed a much better movie than this

Poor laughs, weak story, 'Larry Crowne' is just a really silly movie which won't be watched again

An average movie

Posted : 10 years, 7 months ago on 5 October 2013 10:03

Nowadays, Tom Hanks doesn’t make many movies and he does direct even less features (it was his 2nd directing effort) so I thought I should check this one out. Honestly, I had a hard time to believe how underwhelming the whole thing was… Seriously, the whole thing did have some potential, especially considering the current state of our economy but the whole thing was seriously poorly written. I mean, the guy gets fired, his neighbor advices him to go to college, so far so good, but then he joins a scooter gang?!? Not only it wasn’t funny at all, but it was seriously tedious. Then, he gets a wardrobe makeover, a house makeover, and we are supposed to care? And I won’t even talk about the whole lame romantic plot about the main character falling in love with his teacher… They should have made a dark comedy or something like that but they seriously messed up the tone. The only thing I really enjoyed was the first scene involving Bryan Cranston. But, then, with his 2nd scene, they made sure we shouldn't care about him by making him a useless douche bag. To conclude, I actually think that my rating is pretty generous, it is a really weak comedy and it is not really worth a look, I’m afraid.

If you open up the big encyclopedia of film cliches and turn to the entry for "forgettable fluff piece" you'll see a picture of a grinning Tom Hanks riding a scooter on the set of Larry Crowne. Julia Roberts might have been pictured too but I forgot.

Be! Aggressive!

Worth watching.

"When was the last time you looked at your life and saw nothing but fraud."

Well, I use that Cicero pic as my main profile pic on LibraryThing, so....

Also, I think it would be awesomely cool to have George Takei as my economics prof...but I think that I already had him for political science.

Also, I think that I'm gonna have to hold a grudge against Julia Roberts from now on. I really don't like girls who talk/act/are like George Takei. ("They call them smartphones, but only dummies use them in my class.") Sry.

And, no, it's not a real sport. But sometimes, performing arts are better anyway. ;)

Also: Tom Hanks is pretty cool, and having him join a gang or something is good times.

Lance Corona, that's priceless.

"Yes, Lance, you need a haircut."

So remember: "I'm tough, but fair."

Seriously, though, Ms. Roberts should have really gotten herself a date with Doctor Bashir up there...if she only realized.

Of course, in real life they're all too busy not giving a damn to creep in on your personal life.

But it's a decent movie. Especially if you learn to ignore the scenes with George Takei or--especially--Julia Roberts.

She deserves to date the Gene Rodenburry edition of the Canadian blogger dictionary. :P

Seriously though, sometimes you gotta, "Be! Be! Be! Aggressive!"

Anyway, I think it bordered on the mediocre...but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, since at least it's not a Star Trek movie, y'know?

(8/10)

Larry Crowne review

Old guy goes to community college (fine), falls in love with his teacher (fine), and joins a Vespa gang (wtf). It's pretty much never funny, and barely watchable. It's decently cute for a romantic comedy, and Tom Hanks is always likeable, but the movie never quite figures out what the tone of it's comedy should be. Cedric the Entertainer provides a totally different kind of comedy than the cutesy love story, which is totally different than the zany and random Vespa gang. It just doesn't work, the movie is a mess.

It's not as bad as the media said!
Loved Tom and Julia even though was a very predictable and superficial script, it was entertaining! :)
