Catwoman review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 27 March 2022 12:58

I do much prefer Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman,a manipulative character with a crave for jewellery, not emphasised enough in this instalment, but not entirely missed. Unlike some people, I liked Halle Berry in the title role, I liked the scene where she cuts off her hair and revealed her real self. Somehow she didn't look right with all that hair over her face. When she was Catwoman, she looked very sexy in that leather outfit. Now the script was weak at times, but I really liked the overall look of the film, with the splendid sets. The special effects were a bit ropey, and others where it looked part-animated, or like the Matrix, but they're weren't the weakest part of the movie, that was the script, which seemed rather muddled and trite. The supporting players, particularly Sharon Stone weren't that bad, and while slow-moving and predictable at times, neither was the plot. All in all, a fairly watchable movie, not the best superhero movie, but not the worst(Batman and Robin). 6/10 Bethany Cox.

Catwoman review

You know how audiences dismiss DC’s Extended Universe movies? Well, these kids have never seen arguably the most miraculously terrible and disappointing waste of opportunity that is Catwoman, an origin story which was supposed to be for the DC villain like what Joker did far better fifteen years later. However, this one features Patience Phillips (Halle Berry), a cosmetology graphics designer who gets killed in the sewers, brought back to life by cats, and discovers her new identity as Catwoman. However, the owners George and Laurel Hedare (Lambert Wilson and Sharon Stone), who discover Patience still alive, want to wipe her out from existence once again, label her as the villain, and launch their makeup that hardens skin. Unlike Joker where his progression toward evil, violence, and anarchy deemed believable, Catwoman’s villainous motives aren’t at all clear as throughout the film she utters insufferable cat puns, does all sorts of obvious cat-like behavior (i.e. eating canned tuna, sniffing catnip, making purring sounds, and landing on her feet), and dates the oblivious cop Tom Lone (Benjamin Bratt). Speaking of, how can this guy not figure out that Patience is also the sexy feline heroine, even though her cursive handwritings, cat-like antics, and lipstick matches are so laughably obvious? Furthermore, the movie tries too hard to be visually diverse, using way too many composite shots, ugly motion capture movements, nauseating jump cuts, and glossy metal and brass tones. With Pitof’s overabundance of style-over-substance nuance, the movie seems more like playing a Playstation 2 video game featuring one of those cube-like humanoids with triangle breasts and skimpy slutty outfits. Even as a retcon origin story about one of DC’s best Batman villains, Catwoman is one heap of kitty litter worth scooping out and dumping in the bin.

Catwoman's suit is the best thing about this film. It is a very disappointing film that isn't worth watching, not even for the suit.

A bad movie

A few weeks ago, I wrote a review about 'Elektra' and I remember saying that it was, in my opinion, the worst super-hero flick ever made. However, while writing this other review, I obviously forgot this other female super-hero flick which is actually even worse... Personally, I did enjoy Pitof's directing debut called 'Vidocq' and this was supposed to be his breakthrough in Hollywood. There was a decent cast (Halle Berry, Benjamin Bratt, Sharon Stone, Lambert Wilson, Frances Conroy) and Catwoman is definitely a badass character. However, it turned out to be quite a disaster... The story was ridiculous, some scenes were laughable, even Catwoman's costum which was kind of sexy was still not really convincing. Honestly, I don't think we should blame Titof, I think the whole thing was above all badly written. For Sharon Stone and Halle Berry, it was yet one another disappointing feature on their résumé and it has been a while since I saw any of them in something remotely interesting. To conclude, it is pretty bad and not really worth a look, even if you like the genre.

I was some what let down by this film. But all in all I did enjoy the over all effect of the actors and actress's. I think the costume was very attractive on Halle Berry. Her acting was very good, I think I was comparing her to previous actress's who portrayed Catwoman. I did miss the relationship between Catwoman and Batman. However Benjamin Bratt dose a nice job as the love interest for Patience Phillips. The history of the Catwoman was nice to learn more about. It gives a certain lore to the background of the DC character that we have not seen before. In a whole I recommend this for any fan of the DC comics, or of Halle Berry. 5 stars all the way for me.

Since I can’t give a zero as a star rating a half star will have to do for this dreadful piece of “filmmaking.” Halle Berry is woefully miscast as Catwoman, who bares absolutely no resemblance to her comic book counterpart and suffers from a literal interpretation of Tim Burton’s metaphorical cat resurrection. Her costume offers no body protection and is so ridiculous that I imagine even the most extreme of leather and dominatrix fetishist found it just too weird. Sharon Stone and Frances Conroy, both talented actresses, even if Stone often seems to forget that she can be an effective actress when she wants to be, find themselves somehow stuck in this shlock as the villainess and crazy/wise old mentor figure. I could go on and on about the awful special effects – wires holding Berry in place are visible in one scene and the needless jumping between live action and SFX work is distracting, at best – but there’s so much rip apart in the storyline. Why did they need to change this so much from the source material? Catwoman has been in DC publications for about seventy to eighty years. She has staying power and great material to work from. This is not what Bob Kane had in mind. It also speaks to how horrible a movie you have when even the image of Halle Berry in skintight, ultra-revealing leather makes straight teenage boys long for the images of Hugh Jackman and Tobey Maguire in their skintight outfits.

She wins one Oscar and she thinks she has the power to create her own franchise based on a semi-par comic book Villain.

I don't know what Berry thought she could achieve from this. I really can't.

The only thing I enjoyed about this film was when Halle Berry had to go crawling back to X-3 after she said she wouldn't star in it. Loser.
