Assassin's Creed review

Posted : 7 years, 2 months ago on 5 March 2017 11:39

Notes:
*You know before this was thought up I do recall talking to my friends and mentioning that if I were to cast someone in a live action Assassin's Creed it would be Michael Fassbender.
*I feel like casting is my calling given the circumstances lol.
*It has a pretty interesting cast with a wide range of recognizable names and faces.
*This is directed by Justin Kurzel who also did Snowtown and the very strange Fassbender Macbeth film.
*Michael Lesslie also wrote Macbeth for Justin Kurzel.
*Adam Cooper and Bill Collage have worked on several films together including Exodus: Gods and Kings, Accepted, and Tower Heist.
*Critics and such don't like this one and video game movies hardly ever get a good note.
*With that said I have a friend who loves the games, made a short for it, and loved the movie. He constantly asks if I have seen it or not.
*So without further ado it's time to see if the critics are being too negative or my friend to hyped.

Pros:
*It pays homage to the games while not feeling like the typical video game film.
*Michael K. Williams is pretty awesome in general, but this made me want to see him in more action films. He just looked badass.
*The acting was excellent of course given the talent involved.
*The fight scenes are fun and what I was hoping for.
*The story was good and kept me invested.
*This is by far my favorite Justin Kurzel film easily.
*The Animus here was way cooler than in the games.

Cons:
*I would have liked to see Michael K. Williams do more.
*There were a few moments that felt like the cheap route.
*The ending credits are really long with no stinger to them.

Verdict:
For me this gave me exactly what I expected and wanted. The action was great. The characters were excellent. The story was interesting enough. I think people didn't think to give this a real chance. It's far from bad and doesn't even feel like a video game based movie. I'm glad they decided to do their own story as well. I really think it's worth giving it a fair chance.

Frustrating

Quick review.

Even with the track record of poor video game adaptations in mind, the film adaptation of Assassin's Creed is one of my most disappointing film experiences ever. It is also one that frustrated me a lot. Because the film gets a lot of things right and there is much to admire here. Mostly the action scenes in the past. They are just damned cool. Wonderfully choreographed and beautifully shot. The performances themselves are fine and a lot of the themes the film brings up during the present time of the film is interesting enough. There are elements here to make good film, but shamefully the filmmakers have made some poor choices in where to put the focus of the film.

Everyone who knows the Assassin's Creed games knows that the segments that are centered around the present day are the least interesting parts of those games. It's to be able to explore the different eras in history that intrigues us. Which is why it's frustratingly mind boggling to see that the filmmakers have decided to keep the majority of the film during the present time. We spend roughly 70% of the film in boring Abstergo (the "evil" company in the film) landscapes. The film have reduced the scenes in the past to simple action scenes. Besides that, there's nothing. The character's are all essentially just stunt men. We don't get to know any of the characters in 15th century Spain. They're as paper thin as they can possibly be. So while the action is cool, that is unfortunately all it is. The film should have been around 80% in the past. That's where the meat is.

Whatever is happening during present day is fine enough. It's a bit overly plotted and character development and motivation is a bit scarce, but as someone who is really familiar with the games, I followed it closely enough without getting bored. It sets up for a sequel, and I must say that I'm slightly worried about it. Personally, I would think it's wiser to start from scratch and get it right.

An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 7 January 2017 08:14

To be honest, I was actually planning to skip this movie but Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check it out so we still end up watching the damned thing. First of all, even though it looks really cool, I have to admit that I have actually never played this video-game. Anyway, concerning the movie itself, for a video-game adaptation, I turned out to be a decent watch but I will be really surprised if it would turn out to be a hit. I mean, with Michael Fassbender, they definitely got one of the best actors right now and he was a great choice for the main double part but, even though he tried really hard, the 2 characters Callum Lynch and Aguilar de Nerha were actually barely developed. In fact, none of the characters were properly developed. Furthermore, even though I guess the Animus must be something really important in the game, I thought it was rather useless for a movie. Indeed, get rid off the damned thing and just tell 2 stories taking place in 2 different time periods with 2 related characters, it would have worked much better. Finally, I think it is a good example why such video-game adaptations might never work. Indeed, while the scenes in Spain with Arguilar were quite impressive and apparently rather faithful to the game, they were actually rather boring. I mean, in a game, you are actually the protagonist and the interactivity is a main factor why a game is actually entertaining. With a movie, the interactivity is gone and terribly missed. Anyway, to conclude, all in all, I thought it was not bad and I guess it might be worth a look, at least if you are a fan of these games.ย
