Don't believe the absurd recent mass revisionism and sanctification as a new tourist attraction. Yes, he really was a child killer, throne grabber and scheming mass murderer.

Long romanticised as a brave warrior, and still is in an age of Islamophobia. He spent very little time in England, which he simply used as a means to raise money for his life in France and crusading which needlessly stirred up ongoing religious hatred. His ransom was also costly.

Ridiculously overrated. She may have reigned a long time in an age of great scientific progress, but she was an awfully selfish reactionary and oppressive parent. And ruling over a great empire does not a great person make.

Where to stop? Bad royal rulers have been the norm. Tyrants, mass murderers, ruthless imperialists, paedophiles, fascists, arrogant snobs, rapists, pillagers, psychopaths, thieves... a line of selfish, greedy, corrupt individuals with more concern for power than sense and decency.

Some other top contenders: Edward IV, James I, William III (for what he did in Ireland), George III
