The Shannara Chronicles (2016)
New show by MTV that is surprisingly good. Elves, Gnomes, Trolls, Dwarves, Demons, and Half Elves are in abundance.
It has all the makings of a Zelda game, as well as Castlevania (with it's monsters and magic), or good old fashioned Dungeons & Dragons.
Which is the real life, and original, Role Playing Game (RPG) in which this whole genre is inspired by, and based on.

Game of Thrones (2011)
Castles, Warriors, Monsters, and Dragons. Another D&D inspired masterpiece that has all the nudity, blood, and grit you'd want to see in a Castlevania film.

Dracula Untold (2014)
Probably the most Castlevania style film to date. Definitely the closest one on the list so far.
So close to the games in fact that it stirred up talks of a lawsuit by Konami.
Is Universal (Or a subsidiary) holding the rights to the Castlevania movie and we just don't know it?
Have they just decided to incorporate the parts of the franchise that they like and blend it with their new Monster Universe?
Is this the inspiration behind their Monster-verse (aside from Marvel)?
This movie clearly mimics the "Lords of Shadow" reboot of the Castlevania series.

When I fan-casted Jason Mamoa as Dracula for a series of live action Castlevania films I didn't know about his role in this movie.
This is a great example of what Jason Mamoa looks like with fangs and a little makeup.
As you can see from his portrayal of a werewolf in this film, he could kill it as a Vampire...or the King of Vampires!
PS : The first 15 min of this film is the best. It's basically rated R "Teen Wolf"

Seventh Son (2014)
A lot of Magic and Monsters that you might see in a Vania game. I couldn't get over the bad voice acting and accent enough to enjoy the film.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
Hercules (2014)
Good movie. Very few scenes containing mythological creatures but the ones that do are so well done that they should serve as a bar setter or inspiration for future films of that genre, including any Vania films.
Hercules himself seems to be the stuff of Belmont legend or bloodline.

Wrath of the Titans (2012)
An obvious choice here. Monsters, Including huge monsters that are very similar to , if not exact, monsters that appear in Vania games.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
Conan the Barbarian (2011)
Jason Mamoa re-ignites the role of the famous Barbarian, Conan. Of course Conan and similar movie heroes from the 70's and 80's served to inspire the original depiction of Simon Belmont, Castlevania's first and most renown lead character. This movie has all the monsters, magic, swords, and outfits you'd expect from the genre. I'd expect to see these elements in a Vania film as well.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
It's good not to forget witches play a role in the Vania-verse. This movie conjures up a good one that transforms, much like Dracula in almost every game.
This movie is very similar to Seventh Son (2014), and even Black Death (2011) . You could practically make a Trilogy of the 3.

Priest (2011)
Not just vampires, but someone uses a whip weapon in this movie, making it an easy choice for the list. Although the film itself is not that great, and should be used as an example of what not to do in many respects.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
Clash of the Titans (2010)
Medusa is depicted in a way that mirrors most Castlevania depictions. Along with other monsters that would appear in the Vania-verse.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
The Wolfman (2010)
Nice depictions of mansions, and castle interiors. Great depiction of townsfolk and gypsy villages. Make-up effects on the were-wolf is better than if it was cgi probably. Lots of blood which was nice to see them not hold back. This is the most vicious depiction of the wolfman we've ever seen in a film yet. Might stay that way as Universal launches it's new pg-13 monster-verse.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
A film that shares it's character's creator with Conan the Barbarian, and Kull the Conqueror.
This movie is packed with monsters, gouls, castles, dungeons, and a hero that could pass for a Belmont relative. Even Death (The Devil's Reaper) is featured in probably it's best movie depiction to date.
A very Similar film to Van Helsing, and Jonah Hex.

Great depictions of a Vampire Lord and Werewolves. Also some fancy whip work makes this a solid Vania-verse like film.

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
This movie depicts monstrous yet beautiful visuals using practical effects. Creates an ambiance that cannot be denied or doubted. It draws you in to it's fantasy realm. This should be a strong inspiration for a Castlevania film. It already inspired elements of the "Lords of Shadow" reboot of Castlevania.

Van Helsing (2004)
This was probably the first experiment by Universal at doing a Vania style film.
I'm sure they were aware of the potential of that video game franchise and how it included all of their "classic monsters" from the monster movie era.
I think they tried to do a Vania film here, without doing one, and traded in a Belmont with a whip, for a young Helsing with a crossbow and special ...powers?

Underworld (2003)
The Underworld series is a good example of what can be done with the make up and monsters in a Vania film. There is even a whip weapon being used in one of the films that looks pretty cool.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
This was a nice look at the interior of a Mansion coming to life. Attacking it's guests. I'd hope they don't miss that point in a Castlevania film and forget what the whole franchise is named after...THE CASTLE!!! Let's hope someone gets it right and treats the castle as a Character with a mind of it's own.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
The Mummy (1999)
Well this was a nice depiction of the mummy at the time. The squeals and spin offs to this also contain some cool monster scenes although the special effects would be cheesy by today's standards.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Great movie for depictions of a Haunted Manor. Especially the darkness that is alive, and yet death itself, that seems to possess the house.
I'd say this is in line with the symbiotic darkness that possesses Castlevania in Lords of Shadow 2.

THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
Probably the best damn depiction of Vampires to date. The way they talk, walk, think, and act. No sissy but classy. I feel like Dracula, and his son Alucard, have a lot of class in the Castlevania artwork and in the games, so I hope that would come across in a film as well.
THE_ORIGINAL_SHNAST's rating:
Crazy to think that this forgotten film came out the same year as the legendary "Interview with the Vampire".
I just like the attitude and ambiance of this film. If they have wolf-men in a Castlevania movie they wouldn't regret taking pointers here.

This section is dedicated to all the films that inspired (at least in part) different aspects of the "Devil Castle Dracula" franchise.
The Belmont archetype basically amalgamates the spirits of Conan, Ben-Hur, and Hercules type heroes.
The Universal monster flicks inspired the entire concept of the first game, with mock film reel and actors names in the credits.

Of course the first depiction of Dracula as a suave foreigner capable of seduction and terror at the same time.
Ben-Hur (1959)
Seriously Judah Ben-Hur practically IS Simon Belmont. Whip, Leather outfit, Muscles. Compare the 8bit nes sprite to production photos.
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
This IS Simon Belmont. If anyone wanted a clear cut live action view of the famous vampire hunter it's this. Literally Simon Belmont is Conan. At least visually. There are numerous visuals taken directly from Conan and applied to official artwork, on the covers of games, that depict Simon Belmont. The long hair, the headband, the tooth necklace, the scantly clad approach to show off a buff and tan physique.
Conan the Destroyer (1984)
I've said it before but I'll say it again. They basically took Conan and gave him Indiana Jones's whip. Voila! Simon Belmont.
