Dredd is the RoboCop for our generation, a superb ultraviolent sci-fi action film that packs one hell of a wallop. Karl Urban's performance as the titular Judge Dredd is the pinnacle of manliness, with his gruff tone and no-nonsense demeanour. This movie rules.
A new benchmark in modern martial arts action movies, The Raid is pure awesome from start to finish. It does get a bit tiring towards the end with so much ass-kicking going on, but for the most part it's a superb ride, and its R rating coupled with phenomenal action scenes ensures it's a must-see for guys who respect cinematic mandom.
Not simply just another Jason Statham movie, Safe is one of the most competent American action movies in years. It's insanely violent and perfectly choreographed, with inventive fights and cinematography. I had a blast with it.
Ah, the "man vs. the wilderness" subgenre, a reliably manly category of filmmaking. Joe Carnahan likes to make masculine motion pictures, and The Grey is no different, with its macho bantering, heroism, and gallows humour. An excellent movie.
This movie reminds us why we loved Mel Gibson so much in the first place. An old-school action thriller, it feels like a sequel to Payback. The movie is rated R for good reason; its vicious violence and Mel's central performance makes this an ideal slice of masculine entertainment.
Just look at that cast. Sly Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Van Dammage, Scott Adkins... Yeah, this is a movie made by men for men. The action scenes are superb and vehemently R, and though it's not as good as it could've been, it's still enjoyable. Manly men, have at it!
R rated comedies are another ideal manly genre, and Ted is a superb one. On top of its salty language and crude dialogue, the movie is, at its core, a story about a dude who's reluctant to dump his best friend for the sake of a chick. Very manly indeed.
Coming from reliable director David Ayer, End of Watch is a manly, gritty cop thriller that deserves to be seen. The sense of brotherhood and camaraderie between the leads, not to mention the often witty dialogue, further solidifies this as a top-notch manly movie.
A very competently made western of sorts, Lawless is a manly movie that deserves your attention. It's rated R, and has some insanely bloody violence and spectacular shootouts. Very manly indeed.
The Universal Soldier movies have always been reliably manly, with 2009's Regeneration a particularly excellent manly movie. Day of Reckoning is another superbly manly action movie; it's one of the most violent movies I have ever seen. The presence of Dolph, Van Damme and Scott Adkins ensures this is essential viewing for manly men.
