Tanaka Kinuyo (Kinuyo Tanaka) was one of the world's greatest actresses. Her career spanned 6 decades from the silent era. She is most closely associated with the director Mizoguchi. For me, her most outstanding performance was in his masterpiece The Life of Oharu. I've listed her essential films, with a couple of early ones still to find. The last of these, Actress, is about her.
The 1940 Mizoguchi film Woman of Osaka is lost, but apparently a masterpiece featuring a remarkable performance by her.
I did some little haikus for great Japanese actresses: here's one for Kinuyo.
The full moon has set.
On the frosty temple roof,
a cat’s fresh pawprints.

and here is a fine article on her acting in Mizoguchi films: tlweb.latrobe.edu.au/humanities/screeningthepast/firstrelease/fr1201/ckfr13a.htm
