Lady Liberty is covered in 2.5mm thick copper, which is about the width of two pennies. Inside she is chock full of iron and stainless steel. Here, men get busy at their workbenches during the construction of the Statue of Liberty.

This is Lady Liberty like you've never seen her -- all chopped up. In 1883, men toiled away in a workshop in France to hammer sheets of copper into the Statue of Liberty. Lady Liberty stands 111'1" from heel to top of head, in flats of course.
Statue of Liberty, 1885
Lady Liberty's face was uncrated on Liberty Island in 1885. In the years since, her complexion has darkened through oxidation of the copper. The result is now a green coating along her exterior. Her face is said to have been modeled after sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's mother.
Drawing of the Statue of Liberty, 1883
Lady Liberty's structure follows designs going back to ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Historically, images of Liberty were depicted as females. Lady Liberty takes her shape from the Roman Goddess of Liberty.
Lady Liberty's head in Paris park, 1883
Before Lady Liberty was standing tall, she had to be assembled piece by piece. The beaming gift, dedicated in 1886 and designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, came a long way from France to the United States. America's most famous immigrant, The Statue of Liberty, was constructed in Paris starting in 1883, then taken apart and shipped to America in pieces. Here, back in 1883, the Statue of Liberty's head was displayed in a park in Paris. Check out more of Lady Liberty's limbs as they were constructed in the 1800s before coming together to become one of America's most iconic landmarks ...
