Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) is the older brother of Michael Scofield. He is serving time in Fox River State Penitentiary for killing Terrence Steadman, the brother of Caroline Reynolds, the Vice President of the United States. Although surveillance footage of the parking lot where the murder took place appears to show Lincoln committing the crime, Michael believes he is innocent.

(81 episodes, 2005-2009)

Fernando Sucre (Amaury Nolasco) is Michael Scofield's cell mate in Fox River State Penitentiary. He is serving time for robbing a liquor store to get money to buy an engagement ring for his girlfriend, Maricruz Delgado. His cousin Hector turned him in because he was also interested in Maricruz.

Sucre initially wants nothing to do with Michael's plan to escape and requests a new cell mate, but eventually he helps in the planning using his inside connections when he learns Maricruz is pregnant and about to marry his cousin.

He becomes one of the Fox River Eight on the run from authorities. He and Michael remain close, bailing each other out frequently.

(81 episodes, 2005-2009)
Charles Westmoreland (Muse Watson) is believed by Michael Scofield to be D.B. Cooper, the famed airplane hijacker. D.B. Cooper was never caught; Westmoreland is serving time for vehicular manslaughter. There is more to the Cooper story than Michael realizes.

(20 episodes, 2005-2008)

"Prison Break: The Old Head (#1.8)" (2005)
Charles Westmoreland: 'Cause you still think I'm D.B. Cooper.
Michael Scofield: I don't think. I know. The way I see it, you're in here doing 60-to-life for a vehicular manslaughter. It would have been 20, but the car you were in was stolen. Felony murder rule cubes up your sentence, and here you are. Hitting that woman was an accident, but the car? No one accidently steals a car. So the question is, why would Charles Westmoreland be in Arizona boosting a car, ten states away from where he lived, and only ten miles away from the Mexican border? And why, two days before that, would someone make a phone call to his wife from a motel in Portland, a stone's throw away from the airport out of which, shortly after, flight 305 was hijacked by one, D.B. Cooper? Seven hours after the hijacking, records show Charles Westmoreland was treated for a busted knee at a free clinic in Brigham City. Only way to get from Portland, Oregon to Brigham City, Utah in seven hours, is in a car breaking every land-speed record known to man, or flying. It's public record D.B. Cooper jumped out of that 727 about an hour after takeoff. Taking a dive at ten thousand feet with 1.5 million in cash and a hastily packed parachute, might make for a pretty rough landing. Rough enough to shatter some bones, maybe even a left knee. D.B. Cooper would've had a car waiting for him when he landed. According to D.M.V. records, in 1971, Charles Westmoreland was the proud owner of a '65 Chevy Nova. As it happened, a '65 Chevy Nova with the registration number scraped off was found abandoned with a blown gasket along the Arizona border, a mile or two away from where you accidently hit that woman, with your stolen car.
Charles Westmoreland: Interesting story.
Michael Scofield: Interesting man.
Charles Westmoreland: Maybe I did hurt my knee. I did steal that car, and I did accidentally hit that poor lady. But how could I have hijacked a plane in Portland on November 24 when I was in Folsom finishing up a 30-day drunk and disorderly?

John Abruzzi (Peter Stormare) is a Chicago mobster incarcerated at Fox River State Penitentiary with a life sentence, and as such he holds a great deal of power inside the prison walls. He has a deal with guard captain Brad Bellick which gives him control of Prison Industries, so he determines who gets the cushy jobs.

Not surprisingly, Abruzzi is inclined to use violence as a way to get what he wants, but he's also astute enough to recognize when it's not going to get him anywhere.

Because he has something that Michael Scofield needs to execute this plan, he is able to worm his way into becoming one of the Fox River Eight.

(24 episodes, 2005-2008)

Benjamin Miles "C-Note" Franklin (Rockmond Dunbar) is an inmate at Fox River State Penitentiary. He is a former US Army sergeant who was dishonorably discharged as retribution for speaking up about illegal torture of detainees.

Back in the states, he was drawn into transporting stolen goods as a way to make ends meet by his brother-in-law, Darius Morgan.

Despite the fact of his incarceration, C-Note is a generally honorable man who continues to fall victim to unfortunate circumstances.

Inside Fox River, he works in the kitchen and has a reputation as a "pharmacist," who is able to acquire anything someone might want inside. This ability is a crucial part of Michael Scofield's plan to escape. C-Note is also involved with the black gang inside and, not surprisingly, detests the white supremacist T-Bag. His fellow gang member Trumpets takes exception to C-Note dealing with white inmates like Michael.

C-Note is suspicious of Michael and curious about what he is up to, and puts himself in a position to uncover Michael's plan.

He becomes one of the Fox River Eight out of a desire to be with his family, even though he has not been forthcoming with them.

(40 episodes, 2005-2009)

Charles "Haywire" Patoshik (Silas Weir Mitchell) is an inmate at Fox River State Penitentiary who has schizoaffective disorder with bipolar tendencies. He "snapped" and killed both his parents with a shotgun, but has no memory of the crime.

Prior to his breakdown he was an accomplished mathematician with a doctorate from Harvard.

He is Michael Scofield's cell mate for a time and presents an impediment to Michael's plan because he does not sleep and his keen mind can see the hidden messages in Michael's tattoos. This skill later proves essential to Michael's plans. He asks to join the escape.

(13 episodes, 2005-2007)

Theodore "T-bag" Bagwell (Robert Knepper) is a charismatic sexual predator and murderer and the scourge of Fox River State Penitentiary. As the leader of the white supremacist group Alliance for Purity he has a significant amount of power inside. He homes in on young inmates and forces them to meet his needs sexually.

He worms his way into Michael's escape plan when he learns of it and wields the constant threat of exposing his plan in order to join the Fox River Eight. Michael feels awful about letting a man like T-Bag back out into the world, but is primarily concerned with freeing his brother.

T-Bag is ruthless and capable of holding a grudge for a very long time. He kills without second thought or remorse and there doesn't seem to be any boundary he won't cross. He is very skilled at manipulating or extorting people to get what he wants and cannot ever be trusted unless it is to serve his own needs.

(80 episodes, 2005-2009)

David "Tweener" Apolskis (Lane Garrison) is a young inmate at Fox River State Penitentiary who is preyed upon by other inmates. He was a pick pocket who inadvertently stole something worth much more than he realized, earning him a five year sentence for grand larceny.

Once inside, although he is white he tried to ingratiate himself with the black inmates, not realizing the politics of race relations in prison. T-Bag gave him the nickname "Tweener" because of this.

Tweener is caught in a series of unfortunate incidents that he seems helpless to avoid. He becomes a pawn for various people, including guard captain Brad Bellick. He doesn't mean ill, but makes bad decisions that result in worse consequences. He desperately wants to join Michael Scofield's escape plan to avoid the sexual assaults of his cell mate Avocado.

Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies) is the doctor at Fox River State Penitentiary and Michael Scofield's love interest.

Getting Sara on his side is a key part of Michael's plan to escape. He fakes type 1 diabetes as an excuse to go to the infirmary regularly to see her and to conduct recon.

Sara tries to resist her attraction to him but is intrigued by him when she learns about his impressive academic background and connection to condemned Lincoln Burrows. Sara follows her conscience and is a strong independent person.

Michael saves her life at one point, earning her trust. He betrays this trust several times in the course of trying to escape, but he genuinely cares about her and wants to make things right.

Brad Bellick (Wade Williams) is a corrupt prison guard captain at Fox River State Penitentiary. He enjoys abusing the inmates and accepts bribes for everything from the best cells to work details. He sold the rights to prison industries to incarcerated mobster John Abruzzi, who now determines who gets the coveted jobs.

Bellick suspects Michael Scofield is up to something and forces an inmate named Tweener to spy on him. Bellick nearly foils Michael Scofield's escape plans many times.

Bellick gets along with some cons, like Charles Westmoreland, but is cruel and sadistic when he feels wronged by them. He weilds his power like a club and does not pass up opportunities to remind the cons who's in charge.

After the Fox River Eight break out of prison (not a spoiler, it's in the title), Bellick becomes a bounty hunter on their trail for the reward money. He takes the escape personally, since it happened on his watch. He clashes with FBI Special Agent Alexander Mahone and his fellow guard, Roy Geary, who are also after the escapees.

Bellick is the series whipping boy, and karma seems to follow him, as do prisons and prisoners, but he is not completely irredeemable.

Background: Bellick has been a guard at Fox River since he graduated high school, but he really wanted to be a police officer. His mother, Edna Bellick, lives with him and he cares for her.

His duties as captain include overseeing all inmates in general population, supervising the prison industries (PI) program and transporting death row inmates to the electric chair.

Because he is pursuing Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, Mahone is in the crosshairs of Secret Service Agents Paul Kellerman and Bill Kim, who are entangled in the conspiracy that put Burrows in Fox River in the first place.

Mahone's motives are often difficult to decipher as he is manipulated and extorted during the course of his pursuit of Michael. He and Michael end up turning to each other for assistance at unlikely times as the series evolves into the conspiracy thriller relating to Scylla.

Background: Mahone grew up in an abusive household and joined the military. He was a member of special ops during the Gulf War and earned the Medal of Honor. He has a ex-wife named Pam, and a son named Cameron.

He has a buried secret relating to his work on a case tracking down murderer and rapist Oscar Shales.

He believes what he is doing is justified and will follow the most heinous orders to preserve his mission.
