Yorkshire, England (1966 – present)

Smokie is an English pop rock band from Bradford who found success in Europe and the U.S. in the 70s. They formed in 1966 in Yorkshire, England and did some early records under the name “Smokey”. The band broke into the mainstream after teaming up with songwriters Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, artists known for also working with Pat Benatar and Sweet among others. Smokie is perhaps best known for “Living Next Door to Alice”, one of their top hits that was a U.K. top 5 single.

While touring in Ireland, they discovered the audience would cheer back “Who the Fuck is Alice?”. As it turns out , this was a ritual at a Café in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) called “Gompie”. The group decided to “cover” this version with comedian Roy Chubby Brown having the honor of yelling “Alice, Who the Fuck is Alice?” during the chorus. Thus, Smokie holds the record as the first group to have a top ten song with the word “fuck” in it.

Hannover, Germany (1965 – present)

Scorpions is a hard rock/heavy metal band from Hannover, Germany, best known for their 1984 rock anthem “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and their singles “Wind of Change”, “No One Like You”, “Still Loving You”, and “Send Me an Angel”. The band has sold over 100 million records worldwide. Along with Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Kiss, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne and Deep Purple they are one of the most successful hard rock/heavy metal acts and by far the most successful German Rock band in America and England. Rudolf Schenker, the band’s rhythm guitarist, explained in an interview with Songfacts: “In the beginning of our career, we had a problem in Germany because nobody expects a German band to play Rock music. With Rock music, there are more bands from England or America, which are more exotic than the Scorpions, who are from Germany. But when we went to America in ‘79, we became the exotic ones. They said, ‘Hey, what kind of crazy guys are these?’ (laughs) We were already exotic, with a different view, and we also play our Rock music with a little bit of an ethnic touch. You’ll notice that Americans come from the blues side, whereas we come from the classical side, which is different.”

Boogie music-inspired hard rockers Foghat started off as an idea held by musicians Roger Earl and Lonesome Dave Peverett when they first toured America in the late-60s as members of the seminal British band Savoy Brown. The two of them playing alongside guitarist Kim Simmonds, Savoy Brown was on the cutting edge of the massive British blues rock scene, and they influenced countless musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1971, wanting to give a more slick, rock n roll flavor to the boogie music they were playing with said group, Dave and Roger enlisted lead/slide guitarist Rod Price and bassist Tony Stevens to create a new band.

Judas Priest are pioneers of the heavy metal genre, and arguably created the “metal” look. Priest were one of the bands that helped spur the heavy metal genre’s evolution by discarding most of its blues influence, and created a “metallic” sound which inspired generations of metal bands to come. Judas Priest were one of the first heavy metal bands and are considered one of the most influential bands in the genre, helping the evolution of speed and thrash metal in the 80s.
