American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Day 01 - The best book you've read during the last year.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as i finished, all i want is to read it all over again. Then again, never read a Neil Gaiman book that I didn't like. 'Shadow' is probably one of my favorite male character in a book.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was a tale he had read once, long ago, as a small boy: the story of a traveler who had slipped down a cliff, with man-eating tigers above him and a lethal fall below him, who managed to stop his fall halfway down the side of the cliff, holding on for dear life. There was a clump of strawberries beside him, and certain death above him and below. What should he do? went the question.
And the reply was, Eat the strawberries.
The story had never made sense to him as a boy. It did now.

Day 02 - Favorite poem or collection of poetry.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't really read and enjoy poem. I do enjoy this book though. I have multiple nosebleeds while reading this book, the reason why is still a mystery to me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Son, are you happy?
I don't mean to pry,
but do you dream of Heaven?
Have you ever wanted to die?

Oh, The Places You'll Go! - Dr Seuss
Day 03 - A book that makes you really happy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all let me emphasize the fact that I didn't grow up with Dr. Seuss, I read this book online two years ago, when i had this quarter life crisis stuff, I feel down and I don't know what to do with my life. This book makes me actually want to achieve something in life and make me feel so good about myself. I'm 25 years old, and this book help me more than i'd like to admit :D
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

The Little Prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupery
Day 04 - A book that makes you sad.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I came across this book while i was walking around a flea market in Singapore. Everytime i read this book, there's always something new
to be found. Nobody should go on living their lives without reading this.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"One day," you said to me, "I saw the sunset forty-four times!"
And a little later you added:
"You know -- one loves the sunset, when one is so sad..."
"Were you so sad, then?" I asked, "on the day of the forty-four sunsets?"
But the little prince made no reply.

The Sandman, Vol. 11: The Dream Hunters - Neil Gaiman
Day 05 - Favorite love story in a book.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I borrowed this book from a friend two years ago. I never read any Sandman novel before. The story is beautiful and the illustration by Yoshitaka Amano is always amazing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The monk caught sight of the fox from time to time, slipping through the undergrowth, and the sight of her always made him smile.
He did not know that the fox had fallen violently in love with him, when she came to tell him she was sorry, or perhaps before, when he had picked her up from the muddy courtyard and taken her inside to dry herself by the fire. But whenever it had happened, it was unquestionably true that the fox was in love with the young monk.

Day 06 - Favorite book series.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Was it too obvious? I got in Harry Potter a little late. I read the first book when book five was about to come out. I bought the 1st and 2nd book one day (just to see what the fuss is about, i haven't watch the movie or anything) and read them on one sitting, and i'm kicking myself for not buying the 3rd and 4th book while i was in the bookstore. The first thing I do the next day is going to the bookstore, purchase them, and spend the day reading. I almost wish I never read this series, so I can read it again for the first time.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World... - Haruki Murakami
Day 07 - The most surprising plot twist or ending.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This book left me feeling uneasy and hazy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“You're wrong. The mind is not like raindrops. It does not fall from the skies, it does not lose itself among other things. If you believe in me at all, then believe this: I promise you I will find it. Everything depends on this."
"I believe you," she whispers after a moment. "Please find my mind.”

Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman: Twenty-four Stories... - Haruki Murakami
Day 08 - A book that you’ve read countless times.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was a time when i read this book every night before i go to sleep. I couldn't pick my favorite story from this book. I don't know how he does it but reading Murakami's books always puts me in this state of chronic melancholy that just wouldn't go away. This is his first book that i bought (because there's a sale at my local bookstore, and I want to read a new book but I'm broke, this is the only book i can afford.), and I'm so glad to be introduced to this wonderful author. I've been a die hard fan ever since.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I'm in no position to hand down any advice," he said, "but there's a rule I follow when I don't know what to do."
"A rule?"
"If you have to choose between something that has form and something that doesn't, go for the one without form. That's my rule. Whenever I run into a wall I follow that rule, and it always works out. Even if it's hard going at the time.”

Peter Pan - J. M. Barrie
Day 11 - A book that changed your opinion about something.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When i read the first pages of Peter Pan, i was scratching my head because I couldn't understand and make sense of anything in this book, I don't understand what the meaning with the "kiss" and the dog nanny, I thought it was my poor english (it's not my first language), but then i started to let go and not care too much about logic and just read and go with the story, and this book literally taught me how to unlock my imagination. And I'm so glad it did.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“If you shut your eyes and are a lucky one, you may see at times a shapeless pool of lovely pale colours suspended in the darkness; then if you squeeze your eyes tighter, the pool begins to take shape, and the colours become so vivid that with another squeeze they must go on fire.”

Twilight - Stephenie Meyer
Day 12 - A book that you hate
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I started to read this book without prejudice. I didn't read any reviews, I don't even know what it's about prior to buying it. All i knew that it was a popular romance novel, and I bought it, thinking i probably might like it. Boy, was I wrong. This was before everyone condemn the Twilight series so I don't know what to expect. I'm kicking myself thinking: do people actually like this sh*t? It was the worst time and money I've ever spent. And the first book I put in the trash (i'm talking, actual trash can). Never done that before, honest.

I like a good mystery novel. And this book was actually quite decent and make me keep on reading. But the ending kinda suck.

The Strain: Book One of The Strain Trilogy - Chuck Hogan,Guillermo Del Toro
Day 14 - A book that no one would expect you to love.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I read it because I absolutely adore Guillermo del Toro. I read the first page on Amazon and decided that i want it. People probably won't expect me to read this book because it's a vampire flick. Reading this book is like watching a Hollywood-type movie. It's wasn't all that brilliant, but it was entertaining as hell, and make my heart race. I couldn't put it down. It's weird but when i read this book I can almost picture the book as a full length movie. Probably Del Toro channel his inner movie-maker when writing this book.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What you fought was a dead man, possessed by a disease."
"What--like a pinche zombie?"
"Think more along the lines of a man with a black cape. Fangs. Funny accent. Now take away the cape and fangs. The funny accent. Take away anything funny about it."

Day 16 - A book that you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading this book is like sipping a warm cup of tea. It's a short, light, charming little book. I read this book because a friend lent it to me without me asking. The title threw me off a little. She told me to just read it till the last page. She kept on emphasizing that last page of the book. And now that I've read it, I understand why.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ahhhh," said Tom. A pain shot through his heart,
"What's happening?"
"Pain in my chest."
"Sharp and enduring?"
"Yes."
"But recurring?"
"Yes!"
"In greater frequency?"
"Less than ten minutes now."
"I'm sending over a doctor."
"What is it?"
"He's the best there is."
"Tell me what it is!"
"Your heart is breaking." the Amphibian said.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the guy that brought us "The Neverending Story". I admit i bought this book because of the title. I had no idea what this book is about before. Turns out this book becomes one of my favorite book ever.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One day, you don't feel like doing anything. Nothing interests you, everything bores you. Feel more and more empty inside, more and more dissatisfied with yourself and the world in general. Then even that feeling wears off, and you don't feel anything anymore. You become completely indifferent to what goes on around you. You forget how to laugh and cry - you're cold inside and incapable of loving anything or anyone. There's no going back. The disease has a name. It's called deadly tedium.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I’m free, I think. I shut my eyes and think hard and deep about how free I am, but I can’t really understand what it means. All I know is I’m totally alone. All alone in an unfamiliar place, like some solitary explorer who’s lost his compass and his map. Is this what it means to be free? I don’t know, and I give up thinking about it.”

Day 23 - Favorite comic book.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't really read comic books. So favorite manga instead. Junji Ito is my favorite manga artist ever, his story is always weird, freakishly creepy, and sometime quite gross but just in the right amount. and his drawing is epic. It's weird how I can handle almost the goriest thing in manga, but a little papercut in movies makes me cringe.

Day 24 - Favorite female character in a book.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sophie Hatter: she is brave, down-to-earth, smart, and everything i'm not. Yet she's very relatable. Until she's aged into a crone, Sophie isn't much of a heroine; she's too timid and dull to be of interest. Post-aging, she becomes interesting and delightfully pushy.

Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes... - Thomas Cathcart,Daniel Klein
Day 25 - The most hilarious book you’ve ever read.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One level above "what's brown and sticky" jokes, but I can actually learn something from it. I used to read this book on the bus on the way to work and it never fails to make me chuckle. (answer: a stick!)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson go on a camping trip.
Holmes wakes up and nudges his faithful friend.
"Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."
"I see millions and millions of stars, Holmes," replies Watson.
"And what do you deduce from that?"
Watson ponders for a minute.
"Well, astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three.
"Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are a small and insignificant part of the universe. What does it tell you, Holmes?"
“Watson you idiot, someone has stolen our tent!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I enjoy this book very much. Fairy tale for adult type of story is always my favorite. I think this book is enchanting, romantic, and I actually feel sadness as the pages of this book is coming to its end. So I'm quite surprise to know that people think this is Gaiman's weakest novel.
So... why exactly, people?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She says nothing at all, but simply stares upward into the dark sky and watches, with sad eyes, the slow dance of the infinite stars.

Day 28 - Favorite book from your favorite author.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
His most ambitious book yet. Everything i've ever wanted in a story he crammed it all in this 600++ book pages. He took me everywhere, from reality to dream and everything in between. I went along for the ride and don't ask questions. All of his books are like layers of onions, I never really sure what he really means. If a cake is just a cake. For me at least, his books requires multiple readings to be fully understood, but I didn't mind.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to take you out of here ... I'm going to take you home, to the world where you belong, where cats with bent tails live, and there are little backyards, and alarm clocks ring in the morning.

The Book of Lost Things - John Connolly_II
Day 30 - Your favorite book of all time.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Actually, day 28 already settle this for me. But this is my second pick. This book is like all my favorite thing rolled into one. One of those "trapped in a twisted fairy tales" kinda thing. The "crooked man" is one of the most terrifying and creepiest character ever, and the sadistic "huntress" character bring chills to my spine. This book reminds me of one of Neil Gaiman's poem "Instructions" about things to follow and remember when you're trapped in a fairy tale.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No, all that David could think about was the head of the deer-girl, for her face rubbed against his as they rode, her warm blood smeared his cheek, and he saw himself reflected in the dark green mirrors of her eyes.
