Barefoot Gen (1983)
December 9th
Directed by: Mori Masaki
It's got some issues with tone. Going from the most horrific depiction of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima I've ever seen (not that I've seen many) to fart and pubic hair jokes... I get that they're kids but it just kind of made me wince. It's also extremely ham-fisted in teaching you things, for example it shows a guy go through all of the stages of radiation poisoning in about 10 seconds and die, and then about 5 minutes later it reminds you about it in flashback. A lot of this feels like it was a manga adaptation, the story continues onto new points when it should be wrapping up, and it ends really abruptly. Despite all of that I think it's important that people see the images in this movie, this would probably be good to show in a high school history class or something.

New York Stories (1989)
December 5th
Directed by: Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen
It would have been considerate of Coppola to at least warn the other directors involved that he was going to completely stink up this project with his trash. Especially after Scorsese's admittedly brilliant "Life Lessons". I wish that was just released by itself, it's actually great. If "Life Without Zoe" was released on it's own I could at least understand it was just made as a nice gesture to his daughter, I mean, it'd still be absolutely worthless, vile residue but I honestly want to like New York Stories as a whole and I can't because Coppola is a hack. Woody Allen was there, too.

The Happening (2008)
October 16th
Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan
The only moments where you can possibly take this movie seriously are ruined by the music. Other than that, it's pretty funny (probably would be hilarious if I hadn't seen all the funny bits on YouTube) and rarely boring. Obviously a failure of a movie but not a bad experience.

Poltergeist (2015)
October 15th
Directed by: Gil Kenan
It's big and goofy, especially the third act, but there's a couple good scares in the first two and I've been looking to get startled. I've noticed a lot of movies lately have really naturalistic dialogue, that goes a long way when you're trying to make your audience care about a character and it actually works here. It's a pretty fun time, barring the final act, but definitely better than the original.
