Conduct Unbecoming (1975)
A mystery thriller set during the British rule of India, on an army cantonment. Most of the characters are actually British and the Indians are actually in supporting roles. The whole atmosphere does feel authentic.
Abhi's rating:
Gandhi (1982)
The definitive movie on the leader of modern India's movement to gain independence from British rule comes from ..... a Britisher.
Abhi's rating:
Octopussy (1983)
In the sequence where Bond flies in his helicopter, the manage to squeeze buildings from three different Indian cities into one strange concoction of a city. Well, Bond movies don't usually have too much commonsense anyway.
Abhi's rating:
Pathetically stupid portrayal of India. After looking at the script, the Indian govt wouldn't let Spielberg shoot in India. So he shot the movie in Sri Lanka. Amrish Puri must have sold his sould to devil when agreed to star in this dumb movie.
Abhi's rating:
The Warrior (2001)
This isn't exactly set in India but some place you could call "Middle India" or something.
Abhi's rating:
Sita Sings the Blues (2009)
Nina Paley's masterpiece that combines the story of the Ramayana with her own personal journey and some awesome blues music. I haven't seen such a fresh spin on this ancient epic, well, ever before.
Abhi's rating:
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
In a strange sort of way, this movie captures the bizarre concoction that is India in the 2000s.
Abhi's rating:
Wow, a movie set in India that is actually shot in India and doesn't resort to bullshit cliches and caricatures (almost none, a couple here and there are forgivable).
Abhi's rating:
Movies made by non-Indians that were set in India.
