The 1940's, the second half of Hollywood's illustrious "Golden Age", saw countless classic films from all of the major studios but most especially from MGM. The studio had become renowned for their many lavish Technicolor musicals and epic romantic dramas. Most of their biggest stars of the 30's remained with them throughout the 40's. MGM's knack for consistently giving iconic roles to their stable of contract players helped these performers maintain their box office stature well into the new decade. Newcomers to the stock company during the first half of the 40's included Donna Reed, Esther Williams, Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Kathryn Grayson, Lena Horne, Lucille Ball, Margaret O'Brien, Red Skelton and Van Heflin.
The 1940-1944 MGM credits of these performers and dozens of others are all compiled here in this latest chapter of the film catalog of one of Hollywood's greatest studios. With the box office profits just from their musicals alone, MGM was riding high during the war years and many more great things for them would follow in the decade's second half.
