As Hollywood entered another new decade, film trends and audiences' film going tastes were changing. Audiences wanted to see a lot more police/crime dramas, film noir thrillers, westerns, war dramas and lavish costume dramas/period pieces instead of the musicals, rural dramas and "screwball" comedies that had been popular throughout the two previous decades. While MGM would produce quite a few films in each genre, they remained primarily devoted to the musical (even as most of the other studios were gradually phasing them out) and it definitely paid off for them. Many of MGM's greatest, most popular and most profitable musicals were released during the first half of the 50's. Also, many of the same stars who had been with MGM during the 40's and even as far back as the 30's remained with the studio through most of the 50's, the decade that would mark the last full one of the old Hollywood studio system. With the new popularity of television, 3D and rock and roll music, MGM stayed connected "with the times", embracing each new trend for the ticket buying audiences and continuing to score major box office profits for another ten years.
