Hatchet - Gary Paulsen
This is a great story of survival. I have my class read this story every year. The character of Brian is so well written you feel like you are with him through every adventure he goes on. This story also dovetails into many sequels that will keep wanting you to come back for more.

The Giver - Lois Lowry
In The Giver you get to journey into a world very different from our own. The story appears to take place in the future and sameness has taken over the community. The world is very structured and every year of your life as a child has been planned for you. As you grow older, even your job ans spouse will be chosen for you. The story takes a twist when one person dares to ask, "Could things be different?" The ending is one of the best cliffhangers I've ever read.

Holes - Louis Sachar
I love the parallel story lines that flow through this story. The characters are fun to follow and very entertaining. It is great the very that all the stories flow into one by the end of the story.

Brian's Winter - Gary Paulsen
Follow up story to Hatchet. Gay Paulsen answers the question of what would have happened to Brian if he had to live through the winter. Well written and full of adventure.

This is one of the best book series I've ever read. The character of Harry is a great underdog that you root for through every installment. Once you get started you'll be hooked. Great read for fantasy lovers.

Frindle - Andrew Clements
I absolutely love the idea of this story. Taking on the teacher and the powers that be in a positive way. What starts out as a classroom prank ends up taking the nation by storm. Very original story idea and fun to see where it ends.

A Year Down Yonder - Richard Peck_III
I laughed and laughed while reading this one. I'd love to know where Peck came with his ideas for this story. It follows a year in the life of a high school age girl that has to live with her grandmother in a one street town. She is from a big city (Chicago) and has to fit in. To top it off, every one in town thinks her grandmother is crazy and is afraid of her. The things the grandmother does throughout the year are hilarious. Of course the granddaughter has to go along for the ride.
Flash's rating:
The first book of a trilogy. This book is a fantasy and follows the girl on the cover. She has to go through many challenges to help save her people. Full of adventure and interesting characters from the world of fantasy.

Hunter's first series into the cat world of Warriors. Even though the characters are cats, they are so well developed you really make a connection with them. Every student that I've introduced to this series has kept reading to see what happens in the end. It really grabs you and takes you on a wonderful ride.
Flash's rating:
Very original story. A group of people are living in an underground city. The problem is that the city is dieing and no one knows what to do to save it. In comes two kids with an idea. The story follows their adventures as they try to save their city and families from destruction.
Flash's rating:
Liked the Harry Potter series and want something new. Try this series. The series follow Charlie as he fights off the evil children of the Red King and some of his relatives. He is an underdog just like Harry and is very fun to follow through his adventures.

My Life in Dog Years - Gary Paulsen
This book is wonderfully written and should be read by all dog lovers. Gary Paulsen writes about the dogs in his life that have been his friends, saviors, and helpers. Some of the stories are funny and others are pretty amazing.
Flash's rating:
Gary Paulsen describes events in his life that have given him inspiration when writing the Brian stories. A great read if you want to get into the mind of a writer and see how characters come to life.

Inkheart - Cornelia Funke
Funke is one of those rare writers that develop characters that are realistic and fun to follow. Once you start reading you are hooked to stay on the ride to the end when you find out what happens to your favorite character. All of her stories that I've read are great reads.

Eragon (Inheritance, Book 1) - Christopher Paolini
I think it is pretty amazing that such a young mind was able to develop such a complex well written story. The world that he developed was wonderful and very descriptive. The adventures along the way were exciting and very well paced. This is a fun book to read.
Flash's rating:
Great historical novel during the 1900's. Blends the time period from the point of view of Chinese people that came to the U.S. during the building of the railroad. Takes place in San Francisco and is told from a young boys perspective.
