Games that are unusually difficult

Mega Man 2 - Famicom and NES
With a guide, this game is easy, but isn't every game? Without one, you'll have a very difficult time figuring out which robot master to beat first, and which robot master to beat next. It will take many replays before you figure that out. It's daunting to play this game blind. This goes for every Mega Man and Mega Man X game.

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest - Famicom and NES
This game is well known for its cryptic English translation and open world layout.
10 Second Ninja X - PC Games
Combining the need for problem solving skills with the need for accurate reflexes, this game is very tough but still playable. If you like puzzles, you may not like this game but if you like riddles, I bet that you will enjoy the game.
Battletoads - Famicom and NES
I used to think this was a good game, but then I played farther and I realized it was a dumpster fire. Yeah, the speeder bike segments are fun, and if you've only played to that point, you can make fun of people who say Battletoads is too hard. However, I dare you (not really) to get to the rat race or even farther. If you do you're likely to feel completely frustrated and decide this game in particular is very bad.
Tekken - PlayStation
In general, the Tekken series is supposedly the hardest of any fighting game series to learn.
Super Ghouls N' Ghosts - Super famicom and SNES
A highly interesting, but flawed game with slowdown. If you manage to beat it once, and this is not easy to do because of the two hit death system and the enemy patterns, the game prompts you to beat it a second time right after. That would take serious effort.
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom - Famicom and NES
Probably the easiest game on this list, but that's only by comparison! The English version of this game made all enemies do double damage and it also changed the enemy patterns to be more difficult. Did I mention you don't have passwords (which the original had) and you can run out of continues? To make it as difficult as it's meant to be, try defeating each enemy on screen.

Kid Chameleon - Sega Genesis and Mega Drive
This game has 100 levels and no password or save feature.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - Famicom and NES
Well known for cryptic segments and an open world layout.
Dragon Warrior VII - PlayStation
Even diehard Dragon Warrior fans know this game takes an exceptionally long time to complete.
Metroid - Famicom and NES
Whenever this game is brought up, there is always someone who comments on the fact that this game has no map (and you start with 30 health).
