Town Tamer (1965)
Another great Western from A.C. Lyles. Amazing cast includes Dana Andrews, Terry Moore, Richard Jaeckel, Pat O'Brien, Lon Chaney Jr, Bruce Cabot, Coleen Gray, Lyle Bettger, Barton MacLaine, Richard Arlen and Sonny Tufts. A.C. Lyles' Westerns were always packed with interesting stars.
classic movie buff's rating:
Paramount film producer A.C. LYLES is best known for the many excellent Westerns he made in the sixties including "Johnny Reno", "Law of the Lawless, "Buckskin", "Town Tamer", "Apache Uprising", "Waco", "Red Tomahawk", "Arizona Bushwhackers" and others. His first film was "Short Cut to Hell" in 1957 (a remake of the Alan Ladd classic "This Gun for Hire"). This was the only film ever directed by James Cagney who did it as a personal favour to Lyles who was one of his best friends. What made these films so special for me was that Lyles' always cast many well known Hollywood stars in them (even in the smallest roles). Take "Johnny Reno" for example - this film featured Dana Andrews, Jane Russell, Lon Chaney Jr, Richard Arlen, Tom Drake, John Agar, Robert Lowery, Lyle Bettger and (in an uncredited role) - DeForrest Kelley. Not a bad cast list for a second feature Western! I have known A.C. Lyles since 1989 and been in his company many times. To visit A.C. in his Paramount office and listen to his stories about the Golden Years of Hollywood and the many stars he knew as friends is fascinating and awesome. The last time I saw A.C. was on a visit to Hollywood in October, 2006. In honour of his long association with Paramount and his outstanding contribution to the motion picture industry, Lyles was given a "star" on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1988. At the same time, Paramount named a building on the lot after him with a brass plaque reading "The A.C. Lyles Building". Lyles and his wife, Martha, were married in 1955 at the Little Brown Church in the Valley, with their longtime friends, the James Cagneys and the Ronald Reagans, in attendance. It is the same place where the Reagans had been married three years earlier. A.C. and Martha live in an early American home on a Bel Air hilltop overlooking Los Angeles. A.C. Lyles can often be seen today on the excellent "Biography" TV series talking about the Hollywood stars he knew.
I have searched this site for the films of A.C. Lyles but unfortunately "Johnny Reno" and "Town Tamer" are the only two I could find!!
