Eddie's # 4 political movie. He classified this film as Republic. I'm not sure what that means, but, based on my reaction to Cindereally Man, it must mean overly melodramatic.
People who added this item 6639 Average listal rating (4710 ratings) 7.8 IMDB Rating 8.5
Gladiator (2000)
Eddie's # 3 choice. One of the few Ridley Scott films I haven't seen, I'm looking forward to finally getting a chance to see crassly animated CGI animals maul humans. Eddie said this was political because he stands for the Republic.

Casino (1995)
Eddie's # 2. Eddie says that in this film Joe "Pepsi" turned from Republic to Democrat. I haven't seen the film so I don't know if that's accurate. It sounds like a bunch of BS though.

Man on Fire (2004)
Eddie's # 1 choice. This is one of those trailer tease movies (Vantage point would lead the first class of the trailer tease Hall of Fame) that looks like it could be good but is quickly forgotten after its been released. I haven't seen it but Eddie classified it as "Republic".

Mark's # 4 choice for best political movie. This isn't a documentary I worship (it gets a bit heavy handed and over the top with its message) but I must say it kept me entertained and had an actual emotional impact - an achievement for a documentary.
madstalk's rating:
Mark's # 3 choice. The real story is legendary for its political intrigue and impact but I just didn't get swept up in the film like I did in the book. Perhaps its worth another try because Mark really stumps for this flick.

Duck Soup (1933)
Mark's # 2 choice. Mark continues his ribald fascination with the Marx brothers as he recommends Duck Soup. He insists that no one else will like it, but judging by its rating there's got to be someone else out there.
People who added this item 851 Average listal rating (529 ratings) 7.9 IMDB Rating 8.1
Mark's # 1 choice. Mark it utterly fascinated by Jimmy Stewart. I don't think I've ever seen a Jimmy Stewart film, but that says more about me than anything else. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington sounds like a good place to start - thought if I had a choice I'd probably choose to watch the version with flag impalement propositioned by the Simpsons.

Sara's # 4 choice for best political movie. Michael Moore makes another appearance on someones list. He's the Fox News of political documentary makers.

Sara's # 3 choice. The politics in Casablanca aren't as overt as those in some of the other movies on these lists but if you know the background of the film it can come across as very politically charged.

People who added this item 465 Average listal rating (272 ratings) 8.1 IMDB Rating 8.4
The Cove (2009)
Sara's # 2 choice. Another documentary this one examines the dolphin fishing industry in Japan. It does a great job of showing how entire governments can conspire to keep dirty laundry out of sight.

Milk (2008)
Sara's # 1 choice. Gus Van Sant's Milk examines the life of one of the first openly gay politicians in America. I haven't seen it but Sean Penn had better be truly awesome to justify his Oscar victory over Mickey Rourke.

Andrew's # 4 choice for top political movie. A wolf wrapped in sheep's clothing this comedy was released by the legendarily schlocky MTV films. As such, my expectations were considerably lowered (have you seen Varsity Blues?) but Election was a biting, timely and hilarious retelling of a high school election campaign.

Andrew's # 3 choice. This movie cost almost 100 million to make and, to be honest, it just doesn't show through in the final project. Instead of focusing on snazzy special effects and the such it showcases some excellent acting performances as it tells the tension filled story of the Cuban Missile Crisis from JFK's perspective.
madstalk's rating:
Andrew's # 2 choice. Another documentary this one avoids the grand scale of a Michael Moore doc and focuses instead on one small yet fascinating aspect of American life. The high school president election. It documents the ultra-competitive campaign at New York City's upscale Stuyvesant High School and provide a nice microcosm of political life in America.

Andrew's # 1 choice. I loved The Queen. It was surprisingly captivating - especially since I expected a droll British drama. Instead Helen Mirren's performance is a gripping portrayal of a public figurehead coming to terms when her private and public life cross. It was amazing. Despite the praise I heap on it, however, if I did the list again it would not be my number one choice. I disallowed The Candidate because we reviewed it on the podcast and I simply forgot about my favorite documentary of all time Street Fight. Both of the those films would have usurped The Queen.
