Gilbert Adair was a bit of a snob but he knew his stuff and his writing is a pleasure to read.

Bordwell is a great expert on film form. Here he devotes long chapters to the staging skills of 4 international directors- Feuillade, Mizoguchi, Angelopoulos and Hou-, and also spends time on a critical analysis of recent Hollywood trends with faster pacing, unimaginative "intensified continuity".
