The Book of Life (2014)
Potential Nominations:
Best Animated Feature
Actual Nominations:
None.
My Thoughts:
Not too surprising, but I thought this was a much better film than "The Boxtrolls."

The Drop (2014)
Potential Nominations:
Best Supporting Actor: James Gandolfini
Actual Nominations:
None.
My Thoughts:
Am I perhaps a bit sympathetic to the fact that he died and this is his last performance? Maybe, but it's still a great performance nonetheless.

A Most Wanted Man (2014)
Potential Nominations:
Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Best Adapted Screenplay: Andrew Bovell
Actual Nominations:
None.
My Thoughts:
In actuality, there were lots more deserving people, but it should be worth noting that both of these are Oscar worthy.

Best Actor: Jake Gyllenhaal
Best Supporting Actress: Rene Russo
Actual Nominations:
Best Writing-Original Screenplay: Dan Gilroy
My Thoughts:
What an upset. This was a fantastically crafted film, topped by Gyllenhaal's best performance, and all it came away with was a nod for the screenplay.

The Raid 2 (2014)
Potential Nominations:
Best Picture
Best Director: Gareth Evans
Best Cinematography
Actual Nominations:
None.
My Thoughts:
This wasn't too surprising, but I really wanted this one in, but because it's not your typical "Oscar" film it was completely ignored. On a side note, I really feel like they need to introduce categories for best choreography or stunt work or something, because it's time to give recognition to those people.

Mud (2013)
Potential Nominations
Best Picture
Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey
Best Director: Jeff Nichols
Best Writing-Original Screenplay: Jeff Nichols
Best Supporting Actress: Reese Witherspoon
Actual Nominations
None.
My thoughts
I'm a little disappointed that this film wasn't nominated for any of the above categories, but I'm certainly not surprised. This film was released way back in April, and that alone makes it very hard to get nominations. In my book, it will go down as one of the best films to not get nominated for an Oscar.

Best Picture
Best Actor: Hugh Jackman
Best Supporting Actor: Jake Gyllenhaal
Best Writing-Original Screenplay: Aaron Guzikowski
Actual Nominations
Best Cinematography: Roger Deakins
My thoughts
I was very pleased to see this film got at least a cinematography nod, which was very strong and gorgeous to look at, but I was shocked at how little Oscar buzz both Gyllenhaal and Jackman got. Sure the race was tight this year, but there was barely any talk about them at all.

Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
Potential Nominations:
Best Picture
Best Actress: Emma Thompson
Best Production Design
Actual Nominations
Best Score: Thomas Newman
My thoughts
I was certainly shocked by Emma Thompson not getting nominated for her great work in this film. She had the impossible task of making such an insufferable woman likable and sympathetic, and pulled it off very well. I'm not shocked it was left off the others, but this film does deserve an audience and was Oscar worthy. At least it got a nod for it's great score.

Potential Nominations:
Best Supporting Actor: Harrison Ford
Actual Nominations:
None.
My thoughts
I wasn't shocked by this at all, but I thought that Harrison Ford had one of the best performances of the year, and I was hoping that the voters could separate an excellent performance, from a film that had a few too many faults. Still, wasn't surprised a bit, but I was hoping for a surprise.

Captain Phillips (2013)
Potential Nominations:
Best Director: Paul Greengrass
Best Actor: Tom Hanks
Actual Nominations
Best Picture
Best Supporting Actor: Barkhad Abdi
Best Writing-Adapted Screenplay: Billy Ray
Best Sound Editing: Oliver Tarney
Best Sound Mixing: Chris Burdon, Mark Taylor, Mike Prestwood Smith and Chris Munro
Best Film Editing: Christopher Rouse
My thoughts:
Okay, I'm being completely biased here, but hey, this is the time and place to be biased. I'm glad Captain Phillips got recognized, very glad, but was a little disappointed that Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass didn't get recognition by the Academy for some of their best work. On a more positive note, I'm very pleased that Barkhad Abdi got nominated and will be rooting for him come Oscar night.

1987
Potential Nominations:
Best Picture
Best Director: Stanley Kubrick
Best Actor: Matthew Modine
Best Supporting Actor: R. Lee Ermey
Actual Nominations
Best Writing-Adapted Screenplay: Stanley Kubrick, Michael Herr & Gustav Hasford
My thoughts:
The fact that this brilliant film only got one nomination is ridiculous. The one I'm most upset about is R. Lee Ermey getting locked out completely, in a year where he easily could've won.

This is not me definitively saying these films deserved to get nominations instead of the films that did, I'm just saying that these more than deserved the nominations, but since there are a limited number of potential nominations, naturally some have to be left out. Also please note that I haven't seen everything, so I can't be absolute. Please note this is purely subjective. There is very little objectivity here.
