Nicely animated Miyazaki film. The characters and situations are not as simple as in typical western cartoons, which made this enjoyable to watch even as an adult.

The trilogy begins! Since the entire movie is concerned with setting the stage for what happens in the sequels, this one part is not exactly compelling alone. As a first chapter to a bigger story, however, it does actually deserve praise.

Series 7: The Contenders (2001)

Like 10th Victim or Battle Royale or Hunger Games, the name of the game is kill or be killed! This version of that concept is shot in the style of a reality TV show in the very earliest days that reality TV existed. With so many years of television having passed since then, I can still only wish that any reality show would actually be as awesome as Series 7.

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.

I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
