Thorpe, Ian, born in 1982, Australian swimmer, one of swimming’s biggest stars in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Thorpe’s blazing speed in the pool led to his nickname, The Thorpedo.
Born in Sydney, Australia, Thorpe began swimming at the age of eight. He first made the Australian national swim team six years later after winning the national championships for his age group. At the 1997 Pan Pacific Games he collected two silver medals. At age 15 Thorpe became the youngest male swimmer to capture a world title, winning a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle and the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay at the 1998 world champions
