In an interview with the Sunday Mirror in August 2015 he came out as gay, becoming the first British professional rugby league player to do so.

In a 2018 interview with PinkNews, Daley labelled himself as "queer", stating "I am not 100 percent straight; I am not 100 percent gay." Three years later, during a press conference after winning his first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, he referred to himself as a "gay man".

In October 2015, Kenworthy publicly came out as gay in an interview with ESPN. He said in a later interview with Attitude magazine that he chose to come out on ESPN because "I wanted to do it in my words and once and for all–and hopefully help kids that are in the same position I was." Rolling Stone noted the "freestyle medalist is the first action-sports star to come out."

In the cover story of the May 6, 2013 issue of Sports Illustrated, a first person story by Collins with journalist Franz Lidz, and posted on the magazine's website on April 29, 2013, he came out as gay, becoming the first active male athlete from one of the four major North American professional team sports to publicly do so.

In August 2013, Sam took the opportunity of a team introduce-yourself session to inform his Missouri teammates that he was gay, and found them supportive. He avoided talking to the media to avoid addressing rumors of his sexuality. He came out to his father a week before coming out publicly. He became the first publicly gay player to be drafted in the NFL.

On June 21, 2021, during Pride Month, Nassib released a statement on his Instagram account stating that he is gay, becoming the first active NFL player to come out publicly.

In December 2009 Thomas announced publicly that he is gay.[18] He told the Daily Mail, "I don't want to be known as a gay rugby player. I am a rugby player, first and foremost. I am a man".

On June 29, 2018, Martin came out publicly as gay.

In May 2022, Daniels came out as gay, becoming the UK's only male professional footballer to be publicly out at the time, and the first since Justin Fashanu in 1990. He cited fellow footballer Josh Cavallo, Thetford Town manager Matt Morton, and diver Tom Daley as helping him come out.

McCarthy came out as gay in June 2022, joining a small number of men to do so during their playing career.

Fonua is openly gay and a vocal advocate for LGBT rights.

On 2 February 2014 Liukkonen came out as gay in an Yle interview, thus becoming one of the first openly gay top-level athletes in Finland.

In 2014, Manson came out as gay being one of the first out LGBT persons in rowing from New Zealand.

On October 4, 2012, Cruz became the first boxer to come out as gay while still active professionally, stating that "I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man".

In 2015, Denson became the first active player affiliated with a Major League Baseball organization to publicly come out as gay.

On March 29, 2013, Harris came out as gay during an interview with CNN. Until Michael Sam in 2014, no NFL player had come out while they were playing, and only a few had after retiring.

Fenero is openly gay. Fenero has been in a relationship with Canadian figure skater Eric Radford since 2016. The pair wed on July 12, 2019.

Brown came out as gay via Instagram post on June 11, 2021.

In December 2014, Radford publicly came out as gay in an interview with the LGBT publication Outsports.

Cizeron had been open about being gay with family, friends, and many in the skating community for many years. In May 2020, both to honour the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia and to help people in places that are not as open to LGBTQ people, he made a public post on Instagram of him and his boyfriend and shared some words with the media.

Antonio Hysén came out as gay to the Swedish football magazine Offside in March 2011. He won the seventh season of Let's Dance, being the first openly gay person to win this competition.

In an interview released on August 15, 2013, he publicly came out as gay. Rosser is the first professional wrestler ever to publicly come out while still signed to WWE.

In April 2014, Gordon came out to his family and teammates. He subsequently chose to come out publicly later in 2014, becoming the first openly gay men's basketball player in Division I.

On July 19, 2021, Prokop came out as gay, becoming the first player under contract with an NHL team to do so.

In 2012, Davis came out, publicly speaking about what it was like to be closeted and gay in the NFL.

At the beginning of his freshman year, Will Sheridan came out privately to his teammate and roommate at Villanova Mike Nardi as being gay. Sheridan is only the second former Division I male basketball player to publicly come out of the closet as gay with British former player John Amaechi being the first to come out in February 2007.

Graham is openly gay

He also released a book, Man in the Middle, published by ESPN Books, which discusses his career and life as a closeted professional athlete. Amaechi is the first National Basketball Association (NBA) player to speak publicly about being gay

In October 2013, he became engaged to his longtime boyfriend, Julz Heaney, in Hawaii. Heaney is a real estate agent. They have been together since 2007.

Orlik came out as gay in March 2020. He is the first athlete in the sport of Schwingen to come out as gay, and also the first openly gay male active in Swiss professional sports.

In 2020, Vega came out as gay through a post on his Twitter account, becoming the first professional basketball player in Argentina to do so.

He is the first openly gay Wallabies player.

Thormeyer came out as gay in late 2019.

On 23 June 2020, Beattie came out as gay in an interview with ESPN.

Del Valle came out as gay in May 2020 “in hopes that it will inspire other queer athletes to do the same”.
