An artist decides to continue painting his rejected work depicting his wife with the help of a new model. The director Jacques Rivette examines how the studio slowly becomes a prison for both the model and the artist. The contradictions between life and art, and the transformation of a person into an object, are brought to light in long, intact shots in which there are nothing artificial. "La belle noiseuse" is particularly insightful in its portrayal of the impossibility of reconciling art and love. The artist seeks truth in his painting, but truth, like love, always has its price.
