Rohmer's Pauline á la Plage is set on the beautiful Normandy coast. Marion, a recently divorced blonde who is admired by many men, spends the summer at the beach with her young cousin Pauline. Marion meets her former lover Pierre, who is plagued by pathological jealousy. Marion lives comfortably with her new crush, Henri, which understandably does not please Pierre, who is stuck in the past. Pauline meets Sylvain on the beach, and thus has her first contact with the adult world, where there is no place for gullibility. The characters in the film ponder questions that have surely puzzled everyone at some point, such as the difference between mere infatuation and love. And when is it time to give up, to question one's own principles and move on? The answers are not always obvious, as we are guided not only by natural instincts but also by more complex issues that delve deep into the human mind.
In the complex human relationships presented in the film, traditions have little meaning, and the characters, who at least seemingly maintain a morally virtuous lifestyle, appear somewhat hypocritical and self-centered in their attempts to make others accept their way of thinking. Rohmer's film, which is essentially a comedy, does not force a specific, calculated message on the audience, but rather examines completely ordinary characters in completely ordinary situations, which makes its characters and situations easy to relate to.
