Description:
"Grandpa's horny and he wants to have some fun." This line is spoken by--good lord--Andy Griffith, a long way from Mayberry in this alternately charming and cringe-worthy romantic comedy. Griffith stars as nursing home resident Joe, a lonely widower. His grandson David (Paul Campbell), a slick car salesperson and womanizer, takes Joe under his wing to teach him the rules of "the game." But as shy Grandpa is transformed into "a wild stallion," David falls in love with Julie (an appealing Maria Sokoloff), the granddaughter of another resident (Everybody Loves Raymond Emmy winner Doris Roberts). But as shy Grandpa is transformed into "a wild stallion," David falls in love with Julie (an appealing Maria Sokoloff), the granddaughter of another resident (Everybody Loves Raymond Emmy winner Doris Roberts). Where Play the Game really scores is its quirky casting, including Geoffrey Owens, Eldon from The Cosby Show, as David's henpecked friend; iconic character actor Clint Howard (not Ronny, but close enough) as David's all-business father; and Liz Sheridan, Seinfeld's mom, who's got it going on as a woman who introduces Joe to the pleasures of Viagra and oral sex ("She took her dentures out," he exclaims). Play the Game plays like a segment of Love, American Style, but it's got a nice who's-playing-who twist that makes this Game worth replaying. --Donald Liebenson
