One day Billy and his mum visit a small travelling sideshow which features a pathetic phony unicorn - a pony with a plastic horn glued to its head. The alcoholic owner of the side-show taunts and abuses the pony, so Billy offers to buy it.
But this is no ordinary pony. In fact, she is pregnant, and Billy and Carolyn handle the birth themselves - a small foal with a strange little bump on its head which Billy names Nico.
Nico grows quickly, and so does an ivory horn on his head. Strange things happen around Nico; lush gardens grow, springs of water erupt from his hoof marks, and all the animals of the forest lay by his side. He really is a Unicorn!
But there are others who have heard about this strange unicorn, and reporters begin to crowd around Billy's little farm. Billy is caught. What can he do to hide a unicorn? He realises that he must take Nico away, back to his own secret world. He will need help if he is to save this wondrous magical animal from destruction.
