Description:
Lisa Gerrard's music is difficult to categorize; it is an indescribably moving meditation of sound that inspires deep personal reflection and seems to encompass the spiritual, ethereal, new age, world beat, ancient, and modern all in a wordless, vocalized form of communication that is at once immensely personal and extraordinarily universal. Characterizing Lisa Gerrard is equally elusive, as she is a very private artist with a deep sensitivity and a drive to nourish and inspire her listeners; to facilitate a journey of self discovery leading to a revelation of one's place within the planet and with one's God. In Sanctuary, Clive Collier presents an intimate portrait of the artist Lisa Gerrard, focusing on her creative approach to music, her inner source of inspiration, and the influence of such varied disciplines as philosophy, theology, and Middle-Eastern poetry on her music. Far from a chronological documentary of Gerrard's 20-plus year musical career that includes more than 15 years of percussion and vocals with the group Dead Can Dance 4 solo albums, 4 collaborative albums, and music written for a host of movies including her Golden Globe Award-winning work with Hans Zimmer on Gladiator, Sanctuary is more of a collage of images and verbal ponderings that provide insight into Gerrard's creative journey. Sanctuary juxtaposes interview footage of Gerrard in which she explores the emotions and thought processes that accompany the different stages of her career and her own personal perceptions of her place in the world with never-seen-before musical performances and behind-the-scenes footage, and fantastic photographic imagery that suggests the interrelatedness of the personal and the elements fire, earth, water, and air. This presentation also includes the music video "Come Tenderness," a 14-minute interview with director Clive Collier, photo gallery, discography, and a promotion of the Mali Project. --Tami Horiuchi
