Promoted lists

Not a big deal but it seems that there is (once again) an issue concerning the promoted lists.

This list was promoted with only 7 votes (I didn't know how it was possible... I thought 9 was the minimum)

This list has received 10 votes 14 hours ago and it is still not promoted why ?

I'm not angry, just curious...

I posted this in the Listal Feedback section a few days ago, since there was already an old thread on it there, but I'll post it here as well:

"One of my lists, that have been promoted once before (on 8 or 9 points), just hit 16 votes (one day ago), which I thought was enough for a second promotion, but it wasn't promoted. Also two of my other lists, which got 7 and 9 points yesterday haven't been promoted either, even though there are currently lists that were promoted at 7 points... It's not really that big of a deal, but I just don't understand why this happens"


NOTE: All of the lists in question were promoted when they got a bit more votes..

Eventually, my list was promoted with 11 or 12 votes...

When I started, it was only 3 votes but with more than 10 votes, it is getting rather ridiculous...

And now, it has been promoted again with 17 votes! I'm sorry, but it doesn't make much sense...

Pretty sure 4 votes generally gets a list its first promotion to the front page, right? At least that's what I've been observing. Haven't figured out how the algorithm works after that though.

And now, it has been promoted again with 17 votes! I'm sorry, but it doesn't make much sense...

I don't think I've ever seen any list promoted at only 4 votes. None of mine was. The lowest I've seen is 7 votes.

They definitely used to get promoted with four votes. At once point, I believe they were even promoted with three. That wouldn't work now, of course.

I really have no clue as to the point system currently in place. I think it was 7 points for a few weeks but now it looks like it is 12 votes to get your first promotion to the front page.

It used be 9 votes but sometimes now, they get promoted with 7 votes and sometimes with more than 9 votes. It seems pretty random nowadays.

Whereas on a daily basis, you have lists promoted with 7 votes...

It doesn't make any sense!

11 votes and still no promotion...

I just realized that the lists of mine, that got their first promotion at 12 votes, was counted as promoted twice, only after it's first promotions..

I know this because I haven't had many lists promoted, and it's easy to notice the difference, when I look at the details of the points I've received.

yes, you need 12votes now. I got used to think my lists will never be promoted again =)

I have 2 issues with this:

1. 12 votes is way too high. I mean, I have about 400 lists(!), so I alwayw have one list close to be promoted so I'm allright but it find it really discouraging. It means that if you create a new list, if you don't have many friends following what you do, if you don't promote your lists(which is something really annoying... 'have you seen the last naked chicks list I have made?'), it will take literally ages before your list is promoted. It is above all nasty for the new users, how long will it take before one of their list get promoted?

2. I'm absolutetly and positively sure that some lists are promoted right now with just 7 votes. Why is there suddenly a difference made between lists?!?

When I started, the 1st promotion was at 3 votes so you didn't have to make something totally amazing to get promoted. When my first list was promoted, it felt like one of the greatest achievements and it motivated me to make more and better lists. Right now, you have to wait forever before something happens... And I have more than 140 followers! I think it would be better to lower the 1st promotion. It is more fair for the new users and there will be a quicker rotation of the lists, instead of the same thing for 12 hours....

I think I got a list promoted at 7 votes now.. It was during the night though. When I went to bed it had 6, when I woke up it had 10, and had been promoted at some point.. Probably 7.


I agree with Johan on point 1 and 2 there, but I think 3 votes is too low for promotion, and 12 is way too high. 7, however is just right, as long as it's the same for everyone..

Why no answer? why some lists are still being promoted by 7 points and the other 12? This is not fair.

Wow... ya.. my list was just promoted with your vote to the front page with only seven votes.

What I'm wondering is if Tom is work with an alternative way to promote lists. For example:

If you haven't had a list promoted in (set number of days) then it takes 7 votes to get promoted.

If you have had a list promoted in (set number days) then it takes 12 votes to get promoted.

I think that might be what is going on... but until Tom specifically says what is going on... this is just speculation on my part.

I do know that Tom was having to go through the "Top Promoted" items and manual removing lists from promotion. Some members where getting promoted too frequently and the front page was becoming quite the bore. So, testing a new system is the most likely answer.

P.S. I also read tea leaves which is about as reliable as my information gets.

*edit* Pretty sure that the last list that I had promoted was over three weeks ago or at least that is the last list I remember being promoted. So perhaps it is a new time + votes based system for getting promoted to the front page?

I think I noticed books and music lists were promoted with seven votes and other lists with 12. Maybe I'm wrong.

@jaytoast and El Raulo, good thinking ! these are interesting theories.

I think it is a little bit annoying that we all have to speculate about what is going on with the promotions.

I remembered, on another board, someone suggested to display this information somwhere and I think it was a pretty good suggestion. Maybe it would be a good idea to display it on the 'Points breakdown', you know when you click on your ranking in your profile.

At least, it would be nice to get some kind of feedback from Tom about this....

PS: jaytoast, can you check your tea leaves to see what will happen to me in the future ? Will I finally get rich ?

At the moment list in the less popular categories are promoted with less votes (7) and people and movie lists are promoted with 12 votes. The number was increased due to the number of lists being promoted in a day being too high.

Still, it would be nice to have the current promotion system displayed somewhere here ( www.listal.com/user/points ) for example ?
