The two brothers were the only sons of Edward IV of England and Elizabeth Woodville surviving at the time of their father's death. Then 12 and 9 years old, they were put in the Tower of London by their uncle, Richard, the Duke of Gloucester. Richard took the throne for himself and the boys disappeared.
On the way to his coronation, protectors of Edward had been seized by Richard and executed. Richard forced the Duke of York from sanctuary with his mother, and claimed that the boys, along with their father Edward, were illegitimate, reinforcing his rightful claim to the throne.
It is generally assumed that they were murdered and the most common theory is that the murder was ordered by Richard: this was widely believed during his reign and undermined support for him
In the reign of Charles II, bodies of two boys were found in the tower where they had been thought to be buried, but the many current supporters of Richard III dispute their identity.
