c1437- 1492. Elizabeth Woodville was Queen consort of Yorkist King Edward IV, who was younger than her (and married her at first in secret) until his death in 1482. The advancement of her Woodville family caused resentment among powerful established nobility.
After Edward's death, his brother and usurper King Richard III executed members of her family, imprisoned her two young sons, the "princes in the tower"- rightful Edward V and his younger brother who was forced out of sanctuary with Elizabeth. They were most likely murdered on his orders. However, her daughter became wife of Henry VII, uniting the families of Lancaster and York in the new Tudor dynasty.
